Belluno: urban history with a connection to the mountains

If you would like to combine culture, mountain landscapes and regional cuisine on your trip to Italy, you will find various points of interest here: fortified urban history, museums, trails for trekking and cycling tours, as well as Nevegal, which reaches up to 1,700 metres.

The history is particularly vivid at Porta Dojona. It forms part of a fortified complex at the northeastern corner of Belluno’s old city wall. The inner arch was built in 1289 by Vecello da Cusighe for the bishop and count Adalgerio da Villalta. The Torrione is the only surviving element of Belluno’s old city wall. Its construction began in 1481 under the Venetian rector Perazzo Malipiero and was completed in 1489 by Luca Foscarini.

Architecture, museums and Venetian traces

Later periods also shape the cityscape. The Teatro Comunale is a neoclassical building designed by Giuseppe Segusini between 1833 and 1835. The theatre features nine stone and bronze busts depicting Venetian rectors from the 16th and 17th centuries. The Palazzo dei Rettori dates from the 15th century, while Belluno’s Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta dates from the 16th century.

The Palazzo Fulcis acquired its present appearance in 1776 through the work of architect Valentino Alpago-Novello. Three previously separate buildings were joined together for this purpose. The palazzo preserves significant stucco decorations from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Museo Civico houses archaeological finds from Belluno’s early history and the Roman Empire. An official map also brings together information on 69 museums in the province of Belluno, making it easier to choose additional cultural destinations.

The Museo Etnografico del Parco focuses on the lives of people in the mountains. Permanent and temporary exhibitions are presented there.

Nevegal and active days

South of Belluno lie the gentle contours of the Prealpi del Nevegal. Nevegal reaches an elevation of 1,700 metres and includes coniferous forests as well as flowering meadows. The landscape therefore appeals not only to visitors seeking elevation changes and alpine scenery, but also to travellers who want to alternate between sightseeing in the city and experiencing nature.

In winter, Nevegal has a slope for night skiing. The area is also suitable for numerous summer and winter sports, including alpine skiing and cross-country skiing. For the warmer season and combining physical activity with regional exploration, there is the Gran Tour delle Dolomiti Bellunesi: a bikepacking loop starting and ending in Belluno.

The IAT office in Belluno provides information on trekking and cycling routes in Valbelluna and in the Belluno Dolomites National Park. This is particularly helpful if you do not want to plan your days in full, but instead combine culture, walks, longer tours and landscapes according to your interests.

Getting there and choosing where to stay

Belluno is about an hour’s drive from Venice via the A27 motorway. The railway station is located on the Calalzo–Padua and Belluno–Conegliano railway lines. The bus station is opposite the railway station; Dolomitibus provides connections from across the province as well as to inland towns. When choosing a hotel or other accommodation, these different arrival options may be just as relevant as the question of whether you want to focus primarily on historic Belluno, Nevegal or tours in the wider province.

Regional specialties from Belluno

The local side of the trip includes Piave DOP, one of the traditional cheeses of the Belluno area. Cheese from the area can be tasted directly at mountain farms and local dairies. In Belluno, Il Cantiere del Gusto prepares dishes made with local products from short supply chains. The offering aims to promote the Belluno area through local gastronomic specialties. This allows a visit to historic buildings to be complemented by a culinary perspective on the region.
