Capraia e Limite between the Arno, culture and hiking trails

Capraia e Limite lies along the middle course of the Arno and combines the river landscape with the wooded heights of the area. The higher part is predominantly covered by forests in which downy oaks, pines and holm oaks grow.

Fortified village and ancient traces

Capraia Fiorentina retains the architectural features of a fortified medieval village. In Capraia e Limite, the Tomba dell’Uovo testifies to the existence of an ancient necropolis. The Ex-Fornace Pasquinucci, an exhibition space in Capraia Fiorentina, also adds a cultural dimension. The Fornace Pasquinucci organizes exhibitions of contemporary art and photography almost monthly, as well as cultural evenings, book presentations, conferences and concerts.

Roman villa and monastery on the Arno

The visible remains of the Villa Romana dell’Oratorio in Limite sull’Arno belong to a complex that was owned by Vettio Agorio Pretestato. The Abbazia di San Martino in Campo was established in the 11th century as a Benedictine monastery and was almost completely rebuilt after a probable collapse in the 12th century. The Museo Remiero di Limite sull’Arno explores the artisan and sporting relationship with the river: on display are boatbuilders’ tools, models of rowing boats, historical photographs and historical documents. The museum also includes a faithful reconstruction of an artisan workshop.

Rowing tradition and Palio

The Società Canottieri Limite was founded in 1861 and is Italy’s oldest rowing association. The Palio con la Montata commemorates a river race that originated at the end of the 19th century. This competition also included a rope-climbing challenge suspended above the Arno. Every year, the Palio is preceded by a market with street food on Lungarno Trento e Trieste. In this way, the history of the river is reflected not only in exhibits but also in the setting of a festive event.

Hiking trails and archaeological sites

The approximately 15-kilometre-long Terre degli Etruschi trekking route crosses the municipality of Capraia e Limite and is part of Tuscany’s network of hiking trails. The Via Etrusca hiking trail also passes through the area of Capraia e Limite and reaches the archaeological site of Montereggi there.
