La Torba: Nature, Black Sand and Culture

La Torba combines a distinctive coastal landscape with nature observation, cycling routes and cultural and historical destinations. Playa La Torba is one of Capalbio’s beaches and is distinguished by its characteristic black sand. The Riserva Naturale del Lago di Burano covers approximately 410 hectares and includes a 140-hectare brackish lake. The Oasi WWF Lago di Burano is home to more than 300 bird species. La Torba therefore offers a range of possibilities for a trip combining beaches, landscapes and wildlife observation.

Nature at Lago di Burano

The nature trail of the Riserva Naturale del Lago di Burano runs along the dune and has seven observation points. At the Lago di Burano visitor centre, the nature trail is 500 m long and ends at a butterfly area. Individual visitors to Lago di Burano must make reservations by 1 p.m. on the day before their visit. This deadline is therefore part of your preparation for an individual visit to Lago di Burano.

Cycling routes between the coast and the hills

The “Capalbio e i tesori della Costa d'Argento” route is a 43 km gravel cycling route. It includes 2 km on the unpaved Strada dell’Oliveto through low hills cultivated with olive groves and vineyards. Another cycling route from Capalbio Scalo to the Costa d'Argento begins at the Oasi WWF Lago di Burano. The different route lengths help you realistically assess the desired scope of your cycling days.

Culture and routes around La Torba

The cultural side of the area can also be incorporated into your travel planning. The parish church of Sacro Cuore di Gesù was built in La Torba in 1948. From La Torba, the route to Villa Settefinestre follows country roads in the direction of Valle d’Oro–Giardino. Villa Settefinestre features a distinctive, tower-like wall front whose unusual design is reminiscent of a city bastion. You can reach the villa by leaving the SS1 Aurelia at Giardino or La Torba and following the country roads.
