Montelattaia between a Renaissance courtyard and cork oak landscape

Montelattaia combines a Renaissance estate, an integrated chapel and a landscape shaped by cultural history, with cork oaks, fields and woodland.

Renaissance Estate and Sacred Art

The Fattoria di Montelattaia is a Renaissance estate on a small hill at kilometre 6 of Provincial Road No. 19 from Montemassi. The Sant'Antonio Abate chapel is integrated into the residential buildings of the fattoria. Above its altar is a painting of the Madonna and Child and Saint Anthony Abbot.

The area's older history also reaches far back. Near Montelattaia, remains were identified along the Torrenti Rigo and Asina indicating settlement continuity from the 6th century BC through the Migration Period. Architecture, sacred art and archaeological traces thus form part of Montelattaia's cultural and settlement history.

Cork Oaks and Rural Landscape

Significant remnants of a cork oak culture have been preserved in the Monte Lattaia area. The remaining trees are partly planted in rows and partly grouped as woodland; today, they are of great landscape importance. The historic rural surroundings of the Villa-Fattoria Monte Lattaia combine woodland cultivation and forest with arable land, meadows and pastures in a structure of enclosed fields.

The Monte Lattaia Villa-Fattoria complex extends across a wide area with avenues, tree plantings, and rural and associated service buildings. A characteristic feature of the estate is the “dritta”, an access avenue with double rows of pine trees or cypresses.

The cork oak forests of the Tenuta di Lattaia in Roccastrada are protected under Article 136 of the Italian law on cultural and landscape heritage by a decree dated 3 February 1959.

Wine, Olives and Planned Cycling Routes

The Strada del Vino e dei Sapori Monteregio di Massa Marittima passes through several localities and rural areas in the municipality of Roccastrada, including Montelattaia. The locality is therefore part of an area where wine, regional produce and the agriculturally shaped landscape can be considered together. “Olivo in campo” was scheduled for its third edition as an information event on sustainable olive growing.

For the third edition of the BioBike Tour, circular routes with two loops were planned. They were classified as moderate to easy and were intended to have an average elevation difference of approximately 900 m. The planned mountain-bike itinerary was to pass through the rural areas between Castel Di Pietra, Casteani, Tatti, Borgo di Perolla, Castellaccia, Monte Lattaia, Sassofortino and Roccatederighi. The cycling and event references relate to the respective third edition.

When planning tours in the rural surroundings of Monte Lattaia, the two loops, the average elevation difference of approximately 900 m and the moderate-to-easy classification should all be taken into account together. The elevation profile is therefore just as much a part of the preparation as the route structure; both were planned for the announced third edition of the BioBike Tour.
