Roccatederighi Among Rocks and Panoramic Views

Roccatederighi lies on a spur of Monte Sassoforte and offers sweeping views over the northern Maremma. The upper part features rhyolite outcrops known as “I Massi”; from here, the view extends to the sea and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. The Roccatederighi lava dome formed in the Upper Pliocene, approximately 2.6 to 2.0 million years ago. Here, elevation, distinctive rocks and a landscape shaped by a geological history reaching far back in time come together directly.

The medieval village of Roccatederighi is embedded in the large rhyolite rocks known as “I Massi”. Towers and roofs follow the contours of the rocks, giving the village an unusual form closely connected with the stone. The old town is entered through a round-arched gate situated between rocks and walls. From there, the route leads to lanes, arcades and stairways, so that the layout of the historic centre can be read from the structures already in place.

Church, Clock Tower and Historic Sites

At the edge of the historic centre, the Church of San Martino Vescovo stands directly beside the rhyolite outcrops known as “I Massi”. Inside the church is a 15th-century crucifix attributed to the Tuscan area. The Torre dell’Orologio was built in 1911 on the rocky spur of Roccatederighi and rises above the historic centre. The upper part of Roccatederighi contains the remains of the ancient fortress and sections of the original 14th-century walls. Villa del Paradiso is an Art Nouveau building outside the built-up area of Roccatederighi. The Roccatederighi copper mine was first worked in 1833 and lay directly outside the castle. The historical references thus range from the medieval fortification walls and the architecture of the villa to the history of mining.

August Events with Local Character

The Palio Storico delle Contrade takes place every year on 14 August and includes a donkey race involving residents and tourists. In the Palio Storico delle Contrade, five contrade—Corso, Torre, Tramonto, Nobili and Ventosa—compete for a palio banner along the village’s main street. The banner is designed by a different artist each year. Another cultural event is “Medioevo nel Borgo”, held every year since 1993 on the first weekend of August.
