Montevitozzo: Elevation, Castle Remains and Local Traditions
Montevitozzo lies 668 metres above sea level, making it the highest-elevation hamlet in the municipality of Sorano. Its elevation, historic traces and paths into the surrounding area provide different starting points for planning your trip. You can get to know the village through its history, local traditions or landscape attractions. Especially if you would like to combine cultural impressions with a mountainous setting, these three perspectives can be considered separately.
Elevation and Castle History
The summit of the mountain above Montevitozzo is strategically located and offers control over a wide area. The remains of the castle there are said to have been part of the Aldobrandeschi fief. After the castle fell into disrepair, the Orsini had a fortified villa built further below in the 16th century. The castle remains and the villa therefore represent different points in the history of the village and give its elevation a historical dimension.
Church, Memorial Park and Traditions
Montevitozzo is home to the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The Parco della Rimembranza di Montevitozzo is a memorial park for those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. There, 37 small memorial stones are arranged and preserved in four rows. The patronal feast in honour of Saint James the Apostle is listed as taking place on 25 July.
On 5 January, Montevitozzo celebrates the traditional custom of the āBefaniā. Songs are sung, food and drink are shared, and contributions are collected for lunch the following day.
Trails, Spring and Ancient Sites
A trail leads from Montevitozzo to the rock formation of La Rocaccia. Along this trail, you reach Fonte Grande, a natural spring, as well as a small lake. Vitozza, an ancient site, lies in the surrounding area of Montevitozzo.
Mountains in the Surrounding Area
The surrounding area of Montevitozzo also includes Monte Chiuso, a mountain, Monte Elmo, a peak, Poggio Pocorno, a peak, and Monte Civitella, a mountain. This gives you various landscape features to consider alongside the historic attractions in the village when planning your trip. The individual names help you view mountains and peaks as distinct elements of the surrounding area.
Destinations in the Wider Region
The wider region around Montevitozzo includes the Abbazia di San Salvatore, a monastery, Visentium, an ancient site, and the Parco Archeologico Naturalistico Di Belvedere, also an ancient site. Together with Vitozza, the cultural spectrum ranges from ancient sites and a monastery to the traces of the castle and villa in Montevitozzo. If you are considering accommodation in Montevitozzo, you can use these geographically tiered themes to help determine the focus of your stay: local history, trails or regional culture.
