Bagnaia: Bay, Beach and History

Bagnaia is located on the bay of the same name, which is protected by Punta Pina to the south and Punta degli Scarpellini to the north. The Fosso di Bagnaia runs through the village after flowing down from Monte Volterraio. This combination of a sheltered coastal location, watercourse and historic sites gives you several options for planning your stay.

Bay, Beach and Underwater World

The beach at Baia di Bagnaia is about 300 metres long. You will find sand and pebbles there; the seabed consists of fine gravel. Bagnaia is also a starting point for snorkelling to explore Elba’s underwater world. Other beaches are located in the surrounding area: Spiaggia di Bagnaia, Spiaggia di Nisporto, Spiaggia della Padulella and Spiaggia di Capo Bianco. This allows the coastal theme to be combined with different beach destinations without reducing the local bay to a single type of landscape.

Maritime History and Architecture

Bagnaia also has a maritime and architectural history. Between 1742 and 1746, Grand Duke Francesco II of Lorraine had salt pans built here. In 1752, a harbour was built in Bagnaia for stationing the grand ducal fleet. In 1946, Giuseppe Cacciò founded the Cantiere Elba shipyard, where, among others, the wooden vessels Elba Ia and Bagnaia were built. The Complesso Residenziale Sant'Anna residential complex was built between 1974 and 1991 based on designs by architects Roberto Gabetti and Aimaro Isola.

Trails, Fortress and Views

For active days, the network of walking and cycling trails includes the shorter north–south route from Bagnaia to Porto Azzurro. The Fortezza del Volterraio is located nearby; it has been restored by the park administration and can now be visited again. It stands at an altitude of 395 metres above sea level in a rocky setting with panoramic views. Guided visits include trekking and admission to the fortress; advance booking is required. The summit of Monte Capannello offers a 360-degree view across the Bagnaia valley towards Fortezza del Volterraio. Guided excursions along the trails in the surrounding area start from the CEA “Franco Franchini”.

Gardens, Hermitage and Local Tradition

L’Orto dei Semplici covers an area of approximately one hectare near the Eremo di Santa Caterina. The garden was established in 1997 as a place of study for the plant diversity of Elba and the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Information panels explain the plants collected, their characteristics and their traditional medicinal and culinary uses. The nearby Eremo di Santa Caterina probably dates back to the Romanesque period and was expanded and remodelled in 1634. It was built on the remains of a hilltop fortress erected by the Phoenicians in the 6th century BC. Traditionally, a festival is held there every year on the Monday after Easter.

The surrounding area of Bagnaia includes Castello del Volterraio, a castle, the Museo Nazionale Delle Residenze Napoleoniche, a museum, and Forte Stella, a fortress. Villa di San Martino, a palace, is also located nearby. The Museo archeologico del Distretto minerario di Rio nell’Elba displays archaeological finds from the island of Elba. These destinations complement the coastal and trail landscape with different ways of exploring history, architecture and regional cultural heritage.
