Portoferraio combines fortresses and museums with coastline and a marine protected area. For planning your trip, historical sites, beaches, a cycling tour classified as easy, and the ferry connection between Piombino and Portoferraio all come together. The area around Portoferraio is home to further museums, beaches, a palace and a fortress.
Fortresses, Museums and Napoleonic History
Portoferraio’s municipal museum network includes the Area archeologica delle Grotte. The remains of the Roman Villa della Linguella are located alongside the Museo civico archeologico della Linguella. The Linguella area therefore brings together an archaeological collection and Roman architectural remains.
The Fortezze Medicee di Portoferraio began to take shape in 1548. Napoleon Bonaparte lived in exile in Portoferraio from 4 May 1814 to 26 February 1815. The Palazzina dei Mulini preserves contemporary memorabilia, furnishings, furniture and part of the library that Napoleon had brought with him.
The Pinacoteca Foresiana di Portoferraio was established in 1914 through a donation by Mario Foresi. Since 1991, it has been housed in the historic De Laugier barracks.
The Museo Nazionale Delle Residenze Napoleoniche and the Museo Nazionale delle Residenze Napoleoniche dell'isola d'Elba are located in the area around Portoferraio. The Villa di San Martino, a palace, and the Forte Stella, a fortress, are also nearby.
Coastline and Nature in the Surrounding Area
The marine area near Le Ghiaie, where Lo Scoglietto is located, is a marine protected area established on 10 August 1971 in the municipality of Portoferraio, between Punta Falcone and Capo Bianco. At the Forte Inglese, historic architecture meets a rich variety of animal and plant life.
Several beaches are located in the area around Portoferraio: Spiaggia Di Sottobomba, Spiaggia di Capo Bianco, Spiaggia della Padulella and Spiaggia Seccione. Alongside the protected area, the four beaches form a distinct coastal area to include in your daily plans.
Cycling Tour and Getting There
“Portoferraio e le coste bianche” is classified as an easy cycling tour to Portoferraio’s white beaches. The easy classification provides clear guidance for planning a day along the white beaches. Alongside museums and fortresses, the cycling tour occupies a distinct place in your daily plans.
