Cavoli: Beach and Granite History on Elba

Cavoli combines the coastal setting of Spiaggia di Cavoli with an unusually tangible history of granite. At the center is Spiaggia di Cavoli, a beach with light-colored sand in a sheltered bay. From here, the island of Montecristo is clearly visible. This means the surrounding area offers not only a clear landscape connection to the sea, but also a fixed starting point for exploring the rock deposits and their historical use on Elba.

Beach Landscape and Orientation

Spiaggia di Cavoli is located in the immediate surroundings of Cavoli. For orientation by car, free parking is available along the provincial road, as well as paid parking spaces in a small car park near the beach. The parking facilities belong to Spiaggia di Cavoli.

Other beaches are also located in the immediate surroundings of Cavoli: Spiaggia di Seccheto, Spiaggia di Fetovaia, and La Galenzana expand the town’s coastal connection. Granite as Landscape and History

Around Cavoli, granite appears not only as a geological subject, but also in historical traces. The “cave antiche” for granite columns are located in the hamlet of Grottarelle in the municipality of Campo nell’Elba, in the immediate surroundings of Spiaggia di Cavoli. They cover around 2,000 m² and are situated at an elevation of 250 m. The granite deposits of Cavoli were among the sites on Elba that became an extensive worksite during Roman times.

Ancient granite quarries can be seen along Path No. 134B, where traces of granite extraction and processing have been preserved. The “Le vie del granito” area includes numerous abandoned granite quarries. Another point of reference is Capanna di Marco, located between the hills of Cavoli and San Piero on Path No. 134. These location and route references make the history of granite understandable through specific places, without limiting it to a single attraction.

Unexplained Evidence and Historic Sites

One noteworthy individual object is the Antica Macina di Cavoli. It is an ancient millstone, broken into two pieces, on the hill above Cavoli, and consists of a fragile block of granite known locally as “cote morta.” The origin and function of the Antica Macina di Cavoli remain unclear. Possible interpretations include an origin in Roman times and use as an archaic wine press. This open classification preserves the character of a historical mystery instead of anticipating an unsupported explanation.

A medium-sized granite column, recovered after a severe storm surge, is visible in the garden next to the building known as “l’arsenale.” This local view of the past is complemented by several museums and historic buildings in the surroundings of Cavoli: Museo Civico Archeologico e Fortezza Pisana is a museum, as is Museo Nazionale delle Residenze Napoleoniche dell'isola d'Elba. Villa di San Martino is a palace, while Fortezza Pisana is a fortress. In this way, the cultural surroundings extend from archaeological and Napoleonic themes to the granite quarries and the individual traces found on site.
