Montioncello: Landscape and Mining History near Campiglia Marittima

The Countryside at Monte Solaio

The area along Via di Montioncello lies at the foot of Monte Solaio. Montioncello is assigned to the rural, open sub-area of the Cornia River floodplain. The agricultural surroundings along Via di Montioncello are partly planted with olive groves; a row of cypresses runs along their extension. The row of cypresses gives the open agricultural landscape a clearly recognizable spatial line.

Traces of Estate and Settlement

Two buildings were once part of a small built complex that formerly constituted the “Fattoria di Montioncello.” Today, the complex is used predominantly for residential purposes. On a historical plan of the Bandita estate, a small hill is marked “Montioncello.” On the historical plan of Bandita, Montioncello, the Cornia River and its embankment are shown together. The road designation “strada Montioncello - Bandita” is also associated with Campiglia Marittima.

Two surface finds interpreted as houses were identified during field surveys in the LocalitĂ  Montioncello. They may have formed a settlement system near the Fosso Corniaccia together with further finds. This gives the local landscape an archaeological dimension in addition to its rural character.
