Campiglia Marittima is situated on a hill overlooking the sea and the surrounding landscape. The historic centre has been documented since the 11th century and forms a monumental complex as a whole. In this way, the town combines expansive landscapes with a dense succession of buildings, museums and traces of regional history.

Historic Centre and Art

A special way to explore the town's history is the art-education tour “Una Via, un Nome, un Ritratto”. It begins at Porta Pozzolungo in the historic centre and leads to fresco portraits placed beneath street or commemorative plaques. Palazzo Pretorio houses the permanent exhibition of the “Carlo Guarnieri” Museum, featuring 61 works: 36 woodcuts including the corresponding printing blocks, 7 studies and drawings, and 18 paintings.

The Museo d'Arte Sacra is located in the Sala delle Volte of the Church of San Lorenzo. There you can see a collection of liturgical and devotional objects. The Pieve di San Giovanni was built in 1173. As a Tuscan Romanesque church, it displays elements of Pisan architecture. Palazzo Pretorio itself is also part of the town's historic setting: the building dates from the 13th century and was formerly the seat of the Capitano di Giustizia.

The Rocca and Theatre History

The Rocca di Campiglia is located on the town's highest hill, at an elevation of 281 metres. It includes the Cassero, an ancient cistern, a crenellated wall with a bifora window, and an aqueduct from the 1930s. The Teatro dei Concordi was inaugurated in 1867 as an Italian theatre with an elliptical floor plan and three tiers of boxes. Together with the religious and administrative buildings, it creates a multifaceted picture of the local architectural history.

Experience Mining and Stay Active

At the Parco Archeominerario di San Silvestro, visitors can explore two mine galleries: one on foot and one by a specially reconstructed train. The Miniera del Temperino includes a 360-metre-long gallery. There, visitors can observe ancient and modern mining techniques, as well as rocks and metal-bearing minerals. The experience therefore ranges from the historical world of work to the geological nature of the underlying ground.

For children aged 6 to 12, the Bike Skill Park in the Parco archeominerario di San Silvestro offers a technical mountain-bike course. Bicycles and helmets are provided, and the activity is supervised by qualified professionals. The ApritiBorgo! ABC Festival adds a seasonal cultural highlight: it is an international theatre festival held every summer in Campiglia Marittima.

Thermal History and Local Speciality

The historic thermal spa facility Stabilimento Termale di Venturina Terme is located within the municipality of Campiglia Marittima. It was already known as Caldane in Etruscan-Roman times. As a local speciality, Schiaccia campigliese is recommended, and you can try it in Campiglia Marittima.
