Basati Among Mountain Trails and Historic Traces

Basati lies on the eastern slopes of Monte Cavallo, above the Giardino Valley. The village combines mountain landscapes, hiking trails, and local history into a destination with different points of focus. This allows you to plan your time according to your interests in nature, outdoor activities, sacred architecture, or the region's past.

Hiking Trails and Historic Routes

The two hiking trails along the Canale del Giardino and to Monte Calvario begin in Basati. The trail along the Canale del Giardino starts in the Basati district, runs through wooded terrain on the right side of the valley, and follows the foot of the western rock face of Monte Altissimo. The trail to Monte Calvario features fourteen Stations of the Cross.

The Minazzana–Basati route is part of the Sentieri Alta Versilia trail network. It initially follows an uphill path that becomes a mule track, leading to Monte Calvario and then descending via the Stations of the Cross to the Basati car park. When dividing the Minazzana–Basati route into sections, the transition from the uphill path to the mule track is just as relevant as the sequence of the fourteen Stations of the Cross during the later descent to the Basati car park. Those planning the Minazzana–Basati route can therefore divide the ascent and the later descent into separate sections. The Grotta delle Fate is a karst cavity accessible via the Via degli Omini trail. From Basati, a trail also follows the former Via dell'Alpe route to the Cervaiole quarries, which was used by quarry workers.

Mountain Views, Cycling Route, and Surroundings

Basati offers views of Corchia and Pania della Croce. The Panorami dell'alta Versilia cycling loop provides views of these two mountains; on the approach to Basati, views of the Versilia coast and the Vezza Valley are added. The Pozzo della Madonna waterfall and Monte Corchia are located in the immediate surroundings of Basati. The summit of Monte Altissimo is in the vicinity of Basati. Spiaggia Forte dei Marmi beach is also nearby.

History and Sacred Sites

Basati specialized in metalworking in the past. The first ironworks in Basati is documented as dating from 1446; the village is also associated with a historic lapis lazuli mine. The Church of Sant'Ansano in Basati has been documented since 1538 and became an independent parish during the 18th century.

The remains of the Mulino di Tortuliano are located along the stream of Basati, near its confluence with the Giardino Canal. A church belonging to Basati in Campagrina near the Turrite Secca was built as an alpine pastoral oratory where shepherds prayed during transhumance. The small sacred building has a single-nave structure dating from the 17th century and a bell tower separate from the church building.

Cultural Destinations in the Surrounding Area

The Pretorio Palace, the Museo Archeologico Versiliese "b. Antonucci", the Galleria Petrarte, and the Barbara Paci Galleria d'Arte are located in the vicinity of Basati. In addition, you can visit Cerreta Sant'antonio and Minazzana.
