Seravezza lies between ancient marble quarries and wooded mountains. In Seravezza, the Serra and Vezza streams converge to form the Versilia River. Behind the town are disused marble quarries associated with Michelangelo and the creation of many of his sculptures. At the same time, Seravezza is regarded as a natural gateway to the Parco delle Alpi Apuane from the Versilia side. Marble and Medici History
The Palazzo Mediceo di Seravezza was built between 1561 and 1565 on behalf of Cosimo I de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, as a temporary residence during his frequent visits to the marble quarries and silver mines. Near the Palazzo Mediceo, a path begins that leads to the quarries of Costa. This brings together architecture, Medici history and the marble landscape at the same historic point of reference.
Sacred Sites and Traces of the Gothic Line
In the immediate surroundings of Seravezza, La Cappella is home to the Romanesque Pieve di San Martino on the western slope of Monte Cavallo, opposite the Bardiglio quarries and beside Monte Altissimo. During Michelangelo’s stay from 1518 to 1521, the Pieve di San Martino was restored and expanded. The monument to the Gothic Line on Monte Folgorito stands at the foot of the summit in the municipality of Seravezza. At the site of the battle between Carchio and Monte Folgorito, five major German fortifications as well as numerous firing pits, trenches, caves and shelters are visible.
Routes and Getting There
A hiking trail leads from Seravezza to Monte Folgorito. Seravezza is easily accessible by car via the A12 motorway, Versilia exit. The town can also be reached via the Pisa–Genoa railway line and the Forte dei Marmi-Seravezza-Querceta railway station. The feast of San Lorenzo, the town’s patron saint, takes place in Seravezza on 9 and 10 August, with a traditional bonfire at the confluence of the Serra and Vezza streams. The so-called Fiera del Nove takes place in the first week of September and features stalls offering tastings of local products. Alongside marble and history, scheduled festivals and regional flavors are therefore also part of the town’s character.
