Cerreta Sant'Antonio: Village History, Fountain and SAV Hiking Route

Village Structure and Early History

Cerreta Sant'Antonio is a village whose houses are arranged along two streets. Both streets converge at the main fountain complex. This preserves an original structure dating from the 18th century. At the same time, Cerreta Sant'Antonio is already mentioned as a village in the 10th century. The fountain complex is therefore one of the defining architectural elements of the village center. As they walk through Cerreta Sant'Antonio, travelers encounter a villagescape in which the houses, street layout and fountain complex are closely connected. The village's historical mention dates back a long way, while the surviving structure of the fountain complex is assigned to a later century. To find your way around the village center, it is initially enough to follow the two streets to their meeting point at the fountain complex.

The Church of Sant'Antonio Abate

At the entrance to Cerreta Sant'Antonio, the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate stands on the right bank of the Vezza stream. The first documentary mention of the church appears in an assessment register from 1320. It was consecrated by Giovanni Battista Selvago on May 6, 1603. The war memorial is attached to the exterior wall of the rectory of the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate. Thus, the church building and memorial are located in the same part of the village, but in different places.

The Pretorio Palace, the Museo Archeologico Versiliese "b. Antonucci", the Galleria Petrarte and the Barbara Paci Galleria d'Arte are also located in the vicinity of Cerreta Sant'Antonio. For travel plans focused on culture, the village itself and its surroundings offer specific points of interest relating to history, archaeology and art. The Pretorio Palace and the museum, along with the two galleries, are independent destinations outside the immediate church area.

Waterfall, Coast and Monte Corchia

The Pozzo della Madonna waterfall is located in the vicinity of Cerreta Sant'Antonio. The Spiaggia Forte dei Marmi beach, the Spiaggia Marina di Pietrasanta beach and Monte Corchia are also in the surrounding area. The two beach destinations bear the place names Forte dei Marmi and Marina di Pietrasanta. For individual day plans, travelers can note the waterfall, the two beaches and Monte Corchia as separate landscape destinations.

Hiking Between Several Villages

The SAV hiking route runs from Zarra through Cerreta Sant'Antonio, Minazzana and Basati, then back to Cerreta Sant'Antonio and Zarra. The return to Cerreta Sant'Antonio and Zarra is part of the loop and must be taken into account when planning the route. When arriving from Seravezza, the SAV trail to Cerreta Sant'Antonio is signposted shortly after the road sign for Argentiera. For practical preparation of the hike, both the sequence of villages and the specific sign when approaching from Seravezza are therefore important.
