Trassilico: Rocca, Churches and Mountain Views
Trassilico lies at an altitude of 720 metres on the Garfagnana side of the Apuan Alps. Opposite are Monte Forato and Pania della Croce. The mountain setting is combined with a fortification, religious buildings, narrow streets and trails for enjoying views and mountain biking. If you would like to combine culture, landscapes and active exploration, the village offers several concrete points of interest. When choosing your accommodation, it may therefore be relevant whether you would like to structure your stay around local history, mountain views or a trail activity.
Rocca and Local History
The Rocca di Trassilico occupies the highest part of the village of Trassilico. Narrow streets in Trassilico lead towards the fortification. In 1430, Trassilico became the seat of the Vicariate of the same name. The walls and tower of the Rocca di Trassilico have been restored. Religious buildings, manor houses and elegant portals reflect the importance of the village during Este rule.
Churches and Craftsmanship Details
The historic character of the village includes the Church of San Pietro, which dates from 1100. The organ of the Church of SS. Pietro e Paolo is a work from the first half of the 18th century. It is housed in a chest made of chestnut wood, decorated with carvings framing the pipes. Thus, Trassilico brings together a very early church building and a later, finely crafted instrument.
Trails between Gallicano and Mountain Views
The trails also offer different highlights. The Rocca di Trassilico can be reached from Gallicano via the “Zappello” trail, which is considered the fastest route. The “Chieva” trail offers views of Pania della Croce and Monte Forato. The “Le Capre” trail is suitable for mountain biking. This allows you to decide in advance whether access from Gallicano, the views or cycling should be the main focus.
The Landscape
The Rocca di Trassilico offers views of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the Apuan Alps. Together with the mountains opposite, this creates a broad mountain setting for the village panorama.
Fontanino and Metati
At the entrance to the village is the Fontanino di Trassilico, a small building for public use. The entire building was restored in 2004 through a project by the Parco Regionale delle Alpi Apuane in cooperation with the municipality of Gallicano. In chestnut forests there are small structures known as metati, which are used to dry chestnuts. A typical metato consists of local stone, two half-levels and a front loggia. In a metato, chestnuts are dried over a fire while placed on a grate made of chestnut branches.
