Bardine Di San Terenzo: History and Trails Through the Landscape

Bardine di San Terenzo combines memorials, a small church and two trails whose destinations and lengths differ.

History and Remembrance in Bardine

A large stele in Bardine commemorates a partisan attack on a convoy in which 17 German soldiers were killed. At the Monumento ai caduti, a dedication commemorates the fallen of Bardine from 1915–1918 and 1940–1945, as well as civilian victims. The stele therefore refers to a specific attack, while the dedication on the Monumento ai caduti names fallen people from two periods and civilian victims.

The small Church of Sant'Agostino in Bardine di San Terenzo dates from the 18th century. Bardine is one of the places in the municipality of Fivizzano marked by the „Places and Trails of Remembrance“ project. Memorial ceremonies are held every year on the anniversary of the San Terenzo Monti massacre.

Hiking Trails with Different Lengths

The Sentiero 201V from Bardine to Maestà della Cima is signposted and 2.4 kilometres long. The Sentiero 201 connects San Terenzo and Cecina over a distance of 6.3 kilometres. The shorter route to a destination and the longer connecting route therefore differ both in distance and in their course: the 201V leads from Bardine to a single destination, while the 201 connects two places.

Location by the Stream and Landscape

Bardine di San Terenzo lies on the right bank of the stream of the same name. Along the way, there are beautiful views of Pizzo, Sagro and Torre di Monzone, as well as the surrounding villages. The trail passes through sections cultivated with olive trees. A useful fountain is located next to the houses of Bardine. During a hike in Bardine, the viewing directions, the olive-tree sections and the location by the stream can be included in the day's planning as separate points of orientation. When exploring Bardine, the landscape is not limited to mountain views. The location by the stream and the houses of Bardine form the immediate setting; the fountain is directly beside the houses. In addition, views open up towards Pizzo, Sagro and Torre di Monzone, as well as the surrounding villages. The sections cultivated with olive trees continue this transition between settlement, distant views and cultivated land along the trail.
