Historic Town Center and Medieval Traces

Gragnola emerged in the late Middle Ages as a market town for the thriving grain trade. Remains of the former fortification walls have been preserved along most of the town’s outskirts. As a result, the town’s history remains visible even at the edges of the townscape.

The historic town center of Gragnola, with the Chiesa dei Santi Ippolito e Cassiano church and the marble fountain in Piazza San Nicola, is accessible through the gate by the bridge over the Lucido. The entrance through the gate connects the bridge over the Lucido with Gragnola’s historic town center. The church stands in the historic center and has a gabled façade flanked by a bell tower. Here, the square, church, and bridge come together to create a vivid picture of the town’s history.

The bridge over the Lucido is one of the few structures in Gragnola that can be dated to between the 12th and 15th centuries.

Forest Trails and Landscape

The forested area around Castello dell'Aquila covers around 33 hectares. Covering around 33 hectares, the forested area provides its own setting for the nature trails. Nature trails run through this forested area, following the routes of historic map paths. For visitors interested in natural history, this area is a distinct focus alongside the town’s history.

Castello dell'Aquila houses a cast of the skeleton at the place where it was found. The cast connects the discovery site with the castle itself.

The mountain Monte Pizzo d'Uccello, the summit Monte Sagro, and the mountain Monte Pisanino are located near Gragnola. Castello Malaspina castle, the Cava Museo museum, the Galleria d'Arte “Il Borgo” museum, and Palazzo Cybo Malaspina palace are located in the area around Gragnola. The Cave di Marmo cave is also located nearby. The range of landscape and cultural attractions thus extends from mountains and a summit to museums, a palace, and a cave.

Events with Different Themes

The 41st edition of the Camminada di San Cassiano running event took place in Gragnola. The Mercato Medioevale di Gragnola is one of the events that revive local crafts and traditions. The two events therefore have different focuses: one is dedicated to running, while the other focuses on reviving crafts and traditions.
