Mommio between landscape and memory

Mommio is a village whose character unfolds through landscape and memory. In the village center, the Monumento ai caduti di Mommio stands in the middle of the village square at the end of Via Bompizzo. The square and the monument give the village center a clearly identifiable historical reference, while the stream, rock formations and sacred art reveal further aspects of Mommio.

Access and practical orientation

The access road to Agriturismo Restì leads through the center of Mommio and then continues along approximately 4.5 kilometers of unpaved road. After Fivizzano, a side turnoff leads to Mommio in the direction of Passo del Cerreto. This sequence is relevant to your practical planning: the village center and the subsequent unpaved stretch form different parts of the approach.

Stream landscapes and geological formations

The Mommio stream flows near Agriturismo Restì. It rises at Cima Belfiore at an elevation of 1,810 meters. The combination of the stream and its high-altitude source creates a spatial contrast between the watercourse and the mountain spring for travelers interested in nature.

The Marmitte dei Giganti are among Mommio’s distinctive natural formations. They are spherical forms created by river erosion, approximately one meter deep and around ten meters wide. They are of glacial origin and were carved into the rock by water and the abrasive action of gravel. Access to the Marmitte dei Giganti leads from Agriturismo Restì to a bridge over the Mommio stream. History in the village center

Mommio was the scene of a Nazi-fascist massacre in May 1944 in which 22 people were killed. During the events in the municipality of Fivizzano, six of those killed were residents of Mommio; 70 of the village’s 72 houses were mined or set on fire. A „Sentiero della Memoria“ was also established in the village center.

Chiesa di San Martino and Luigi Battistini

The Chiesa di San Martino is also one of Mommio’s cultural highlights. Its history can be traced back to the end of the 13th century: it is first documented as being subordinate to the Pieve di Vendaso. The church preserves paintings by Luigi Battistini from Fivizzano. Among them is a lunette in the presbytery depicting Saint Martin handing his cloak to a poor man. A lunette is a semicircular picture field; the technical term helps you classify the form of the work.
