Vietina between Marble Roads and the Apuan Alps

Vietina is a particularly scenic place on the sea-facing slopes of the Apuan Alps. Together with small settlements, the hamlet lies in a landscape where paths, woodland, and historic traces are closely intertwined. The place is especially interesting if you would like to combine experiencing the landscape, the marble tradition, and several paths with names of their own.

Woodland, Coast, and Expansive Views

The Sentiero della Linea Gotica leads from Vietina into a chestnut forest with some conifers. After 24 minutes, there are fewer trees along this path; the view opens out over the coast as far as the Gulf of La Spezia. Thus, alongside its wooded character, the view emerges as an aspect in its own right, while Vietina retains its connection to the slopes of the Apuan Alps.

Traces of Marble and Local History

The Via di Lizza recalls the former use of the paths for transporting marble: it was once used to carry large marble blocks from the Carchio quarries to the plain. Holes for marble wedges and historic dry-stone retaining walls have been preserved along the route. The Lizza dei Bastioni also once connected the village of Segheria di Vietina with the quarries of Monte Carchio.

Vietina was once home to a 17th-century oratory dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Anthony of Padua, also known as the Oratorio della Madonna Addolorata. Together with the traces along the old marble roads, this historical connection gives the small village a clearly recognizable cultural dimension.

Paths Around Vietina

The Via di Lizza from Vietina to Pasquilio has been made accessible again; the first section of the Lizza dei Bastioni is still visible as far as the Chiesina dei Patrioti Apuani at Pasquilio. The Sentiero del Boccalo branches off from the Via di Lizza and leads to the former Albergo Pasquilio. The Sentiero dei Poggi runs from Segheria to Vietina.

In addition, the Sentiero della Maestà del Tarsetto is another name for the Strada Comunale del Groppo in the area around Vietina. The Sentiero del Tersetto is a loop trail that leads to Vietina. The Sentiero del Fico is a path in the area around the village that the municipality connects with local history and culture. Another connection is provided by the Sentiero della Linea Gotica from Vietina to Col di Melo.

If you would like to place a longer loop in context, one route leads from Segheria via Vietina, Polle, Tascio, and Pasquilio and back; the return route follows the entire Via di Lizza. The different routes therefore offer various starting points for walks, observing the landscape, and exploring history.

Access and Village Structure

A turnoff from the road from Montignoso via Capanne and Piazza reaches Vietina. There is a parking area at the end of the road; from there, the road continues more narrowly to the few houses of the small hamlet.
