Ghizzano combines site-specific art, landscaped gardens and a special connection between wine and the landscape with other destinations in the surrounding area and the wider region.

Art and visible local history

A distinctive cultural reference is “SolidSky”. The work consists of two elements: a large, hollowed-out cube and a sphere with a perfectly smooth surface. The clear juxtaposition of these two forms creates a precise accent and complements the more site-specific art projects in Ghizzano.

David Tremlett developed a project for Ghizzano featuring a series of wall drawings on the façades of the houses in Via di Mezzo. In “Elevatio corpus”, details of the figures San Sebastiano, San Michele and San Giovanni depicted by Benozzo serve as inspiration for sculptures made of marble, neon and iron. Both references offer different points of access: here, façade drawings define a specific street; there, details of figures are transferred into different materials.

Garden culture with Italian forms

The Venerosi Pesciolini Garden in Ghizzano was created in 1932 based on a design by Franco Venerosi Pesciolini. He took his inspiration from the historic layouts of Italian-style Renaissance gardens.

Its design is characterised by topiary and symmetrical layouts. It is also surrounded by a holm oak forest and features an arched view framed by cypresses. It is precisely this combination of geometric order, clipped forms, woodland and a view through cypresses that makes the garden interesting for visitors who want to experience architecture not only in buildings but also in designed outdoor spaces.

Wine, cellars and regional flavours

The “Tour Classico” at Tenuta di Ghizzano combines a walk through the Italian garden, a visit to the historic wine cellar and a tasting of four wines with a sample of extra virgin olive oil. This combination brings the garden, wine cellar and tasting together within a shared experience. This is particularly relevant when planning your interests if you would like to combine landscape and culture with regional products.

Destinations around Ghizzano

There are two destinations in the vicinity of Ghizzano with distinctly different characteristics. Parco Preistorico Peccioli is an ancient site, while Pieve dei Santi Pietro e Paolo a Coiano is a castle.

The wider region around Ghizzano is home to Teatro Romano Volterra, an ancient site. Palazzo Viti, a palace, is also located there. Visitors interested in historic places and architectural forms will therefore find, alongside Ghizzano’s art and garden themes, a selection of destinations with ancient or representative architectural character.

Landscape-related attractions are also part of the wider region: Poggio del Comune is a mountain, as is Poggio ai Colli. This extended area also includes Giardino Bella di Mai and Giardino dei Pini, both of which are gardens. Together with the Venerosi Pesciolini Garden and the Giardino Sonoro, they form a clear thematic thread centred on designed nature, while the two mountains represent a different type of landscape.

Connecting Ghizzano with Peccioli

For geographical orientation, the connection with Peccioli can be defined precisely: Ghizzano can be reached by car from Peccioli in approximately 10 minutes. If you include both places in your travel plans, Ghizzano can therefore be considered a separate stop alongside Peccioli. The other destinations are located in the surrounding area or the wider region and complement the town with a variety of historical, cultural and landscape-related themes.
