Legoli: Art, Cultural Heritage and Landscape of Alta Valdera

Legoli between Art and History

In Legoli, art, religious cultural heritage and landscape come together. Highlights include the “Presenze” installation, the tabernacle and the Triangolo Verde. This allows your itinerary to alternate between local history, art, the regional landscape and a cycling tour.

Sculptures Made from Reused Materials

The “Presenze” installation comprises four sculptures created by Naturaliter Snc, ranging from 5 to 9 metres in height. They are made of polystyrene and polyurethane foam and covered with cement fibre. The installation was inspired by the idea that new life can emerge from waste. When viewing it, you can observe the four figures, their outer cement-fibre covering and their height of 5 to 9 metres.

Tabernacle and Local History

The tabernacle in Legoli is decorated with frescoes on all four sides. It was probably created by Benozzo Gozzoli during his stay in Legoli. In 1822, Alesso della Fanteria built a small burial oratory to protect the tabernacle. The frescoes, the probable connection to Benozzo Gozzoli and the protective structure dating from 1822 give the site several historical points of reference.

Triangolo Verde and Cycling Loop

The Triangolo Verde is directly accessible from Via Libbiano a Legoli. It offers events, cultural activities and training courses. Free guided tours of the waste treatment and disposal facility and/or the area of the “Giants” are also offered at the Triangolo Verde. For your daily itinerary, you can plan the events, cultural activities, training courses and scheduled free guided tours at the Triangolo Verde as separate programme items.

The Ghizzano–Libbiano–Legoli cycling loop includes a short detour to the Tabernacolo di Benozzo Gozzoli in the Santa Caterina chapel in Legoli. The terrace of the parish church of Saints Giusto and Bartolomeo offers views over the forests, wheat fields, vineyards and olive groves of Alta Valdera. On a cycling tour, the short detour to the Tabernacolo di Benozzo Gozzoli can be included as a separate section of the day.

Further Destinations in the Region

The area around Legoli is home to the ancient site of Parco Preistorico Peccioli, Pieve dei Santi Pietro e Paolo a Coiano Castle, the Fondazione San Miniato Promozione Museum and the Museo Diocesano Di Arte Sacra. The surrounding area therefore ranges from an ancient site and a castle to two museums. For culture-focused days, you can consider these destinations as additional excursion options alongside the attractions directly in Legoli.

The wider region around Legoli also includes the Giardino Bella di Mai garden, the Giardino Tommaso Cardini garden, the Giardino dei Pini garden and the Giardino Caduti di Nassiriya garden. These four gardens therefore broaden the range beyond art, history and landscape views, without limiting Legoli to just one type of trip.
