Archaeology around San Genesio

A point of reference is the Antiquarium of the archaeological site of San Genesio between Ponte a Elsa and La Scala. It preserves archaeological material and scientific data from multidisciplinary research and excavations conducted by the University of Pisa, which began in 2001.

The Antiquarium’s collection also includes material from the former archaeological museum of San Miniato. This includes objects from the Etruscan necropolis of Fonte Vivo, dating from the 4th to the 1st century BC. Traces of a Roman land division system, known as centuriation, were also found between La Scala and Ponte a Elsa. In Ponte a Elsa (Poggione), further finds indicate human presence.

San Genesio’s historical position along important transport routes is also part of the area’s history: the settlement stood on the ancient road between Pisa and Florence, the Via Quinzia, and later along the route of the Via Francigena. The Ponte a Elsa (Pino) parish is dedicated to Saints Philip and James and designated as a priory.

Remembrance in Public Spaces

The Giardino di via Medaglie d’Oro alla Resistenza is dedicated to Dino Selmi, a resident of Ponte a Elsa. He was deported to Mauthausen on March 8, 1944, and died there on April 21, 1945.

Four memorial stones and four plaques also commemorate residents from the Ponte a Elsa area who were torn from their families.

Cycling along the Elsa

For active exploration, the Ciclopista dell’Arno is a highlight in its own right. It passes through the built-up area of Ponte a Elsa. Within the municipality of San Miniato, it runs from Ponte a Elsa to San Romano along the left bank of the Elsa River and continues to a service road at the foot of the embankment. The route makes it possible to cycle between the settlements and reach the Arno’s floodplains for recreational and sporting activities.

As part of the area’s improvement, new sections of cycling paths have been completed in Ponte a Elsa.

Palio di San Lazzaro

The Palio di San Lazzaro has been held in Ponte a Elsa since 1982, two Sundays before Easter. The two districts, Poggio and Piano, compete against each other in tug-of-war, the brick race and the wheel race. The Palio also includes a historical procession through the streets of Ponte a Elsa.
