Montale between the Apennines, olive-covered hills and plain
Montale lies between the heights of the Apennines, the hills shaped by olive groves and the plain, on the border between the provinces of Pistoia and Prato. If you plan your trip according to different interests, you will find here a geographical setting that combines nature, history, art and regional culinary culture.
Religious buildings, art and architectural history: Pieve, Castello and Villa Smilea
The Pieve di San Giovanni Evangelista was already mentioned in 957 under its former name, San Giovanni Battista a Valliano. The Pieve also houses the Annunciation painted by Sebastiano Vini in 1552.
The origins of Castello di Montale Alto date back to the Late Middle Ages. Another historical landmark is the Abbazia di San Salvatore in Agna, considered the oldest place of worship in the Montale area. Both sites complement the Pieve with different examples of Montale's history.
Two rooms on the piano nobile of Villa Smilea preserve particularly valuable frescoes. The villa thus expands the cultural focus with another place where wall paintings form part of the inherited artistic heritage.
Paths through olive groves, vineyards and the tributaries of the Agna stream
The surrounding area can also be explored via specific trails. The Striglianella nature trail leads through the surroundings of Montale, characterized by olive groves and vineyards. The Via delle Agne is a circular route between Fognano and Tobbiana that connects the three tributaries of the Agna stream.
Mountains and cultural destinations around Montale
The mountains of Monte Pozzo del Bagno, Parmolaio, Monte Bucciana and Monte la Croce are also located around Montale. In addition to the plain and the olive-covered hills, a series of mountains is therefore part of the geographical surroundings. Those wishing to define the landscape character of a trip more precisely can include these different forms of plain, hill country and mountain landscape in their orientation.
The Palazzo Rospigliosi palace, as well as the Museo dell'Antico Ospedale Del Ceppo, the Museo Civico Pistoia and the Oltre museum, are also located around Montale. In addition to churches, a villa and a castello, the wider cultural surroundings therefore also include museums and a palace. This gives culture-oriented visitors several themes to explore without reducing Montale to a single building or a single era.
A culinary connection: Mortadella di Prato IGP and Alkermes
When considering the area's culinary identity, Mortadella di Prato IGP is a distinctive point of reference. It is characterized by its seasoning and the addition of Alkermes.
