Capitan Loreto: Churches, Roman Road and Umbrian Wine Culture

Capitan Loreto combines churches, Roman traces, cycling and Umbrian wine culture. Regional events add to this picture.

Santa Lucia and Sant’Antonio da Padova

The new church and parish of Santa Lucia in Capitan Loreto were established through the religious commitment and numerous sacrifices of the parish priest D. Bernardo Angelini and the local population. In 1938, residents donated grain around the church, which was under construction, to finance the construction work at Santa Lucia. The chapel of Sant’Antonio da Padova stands on the old Roman road from Spello to Rivotorto. It was built in the 17th century as a private family chapel of the Villa Adanti complex. The chapel contains a 17th-century painting depicting the saint holding the Christ Child in his arms.

Roman Traces in the Townscape

The structure known as “Il Torrione” is a Roman tomb, not a fortification. Its remains are integrated into the surrounding residential buildings. Originally, the Roman tomb stood beside the Via Flaminia, which was also called the “Via romana.” This gives you a historical connection that brings together an ancient structure, its traditional name and its integration into the residential development.

Bus Route and Excursion Route

For local orientation, the weekday LU bus route operated by Busitalia is relevant. It runs via Spello, Castellaccio, Capitan Loreto and Santa Luciola; Capitan Loreto is listed as a stop. Another perspective is offered by the motorcycle tour to Monte Subasio: it leads from Spello via the Statale 147 towards Capitan Loreto and San Vitale, before ascending from San Vitale to Monte Subasio.

Cycling between Assisi and Bevagna

Cycling is also one of the topics associated with Capitan Loreto. The town is connected to the Ciclovia Assisi-Spoleto; the connection concerns stage 1 from Assisi to Bevagna. During the 2025 edition of the Subasio Epyc cycling event, the flexible starting time at the Centro Polivalente in Capitan Loreto was between 8:00 and 9:30 a.m. Subasio Epyc also included Kids Epyc, a cycling event at the Centro Polivalente for children and young people. Thus, the cycling theme ranges from a stage between two towns to an event with its own children's event.

Rassegna del Grechetto

The Rassegna del Grechetto adds to the local character. It takes place every year in July in Capitan Loreto, is a festival celebrating Umbrian white wine and includes dance evenings. The Rassegna included ten evenings dedicated to Umbrian culinary tradition and local wine.
