Ilci between Castle, Church and Countryside

Ilci combines historic architectural forms with festivals and regionally rooted customs. The Castello di Ilci is located on a ridge overlooking the Tiber Valley and the hills of the Monti Martani. This allows you to explore the village through several specific themes: architecture, church history, archaeological traces, community festivals, and an uphill gravel route.

The Castello di Ilci

The Castello di Ilci preserves its medieval layout, while the remains of the older buildings are well preserved. It also features elements of a Roman fortification structure: a central cardo is accompanied by side streets arranged in a herringbone pattern.

Church and Older Traces

The old parish church of Ilci, dedicated to San Giovanni, has been mentioned since the 14th century. The medieval history of the village includes two properties in the present-day villages of Ilci and Cascisci. The history of the village thus extends from documented medieval references to the architectural traces preserved at the Castello.

In the area between the Tiber River and the Puglia stream, Ilci is associated with areas containing archaeological finds from prehistoric times. These traces add a significantly older layer of history to the medieval and Roman references and give the surrounding area its own appeal for travellers interested in archaeology.

Festivals with a Local Character

The traditional Pranzo di Sant’Antonio in Ilci includes an animal blessing followed by a communal lunch. The tradition of Sant’Antonio is renewed every year. In this way, the Pranzo combines religious customs with a communal meal.

For 16 May 2026, the programme for the patron saint’s festival of San Pancrazio, the patron saint of Ilci, included the theatrical performance “I paci del teatro” at 9:00 p.m. in the parish’s multipurpose square. Alongside the religious traditions, the local festival programme therefore also includes a theatrical event.

Christmas and Local History

A Christmas programme in Ilci included typical Christmas tastings. The programme also included FAI-guided tours focusing on the history of the village and its church. For visitors interested in culture, this occasion combines culinary impressions with a historical perspective on Ilci.

Gravel Route and Travel Orientation

The “Todi anello per la gravel” route leads uphill towards Ilci, offering a distinct way to explore the surrounding area. For orientation when travelling by train, RFI’s live passenger information monitor lists the station “ILCI-PIAN DEI MORI”. The route and the station name thus represent two different perspectives on Ilci: sporting activity towards the village and orientation within the rail network.
