Agello lies at the summit of a hill at 411 metres above sea level and dominates the valley of the Caina stream. Agello Castle also stands at an elevation of 411 metres; it has a polygonal tower and is visible from many vantage points. The character of the settlement stems from this elevated position, its fortified architecture and its broad relationship with the surrounding landscape. The Castle of Agello and Its History

The Castle of Agello consists of four towers surrounded by medieval walls. It is considered to be of Roman origin; its construction is probably dated to 217 BC.

The parish of San Donato in Agello has been documented since 1015. Agello is first mentioned in writing in 1115; the Church of San Donato lies outside the castle walls. The Church of San Michele Arcangelo lies immediately outside the castle walls, directly beside the remains of a pentagonal tower. San Donato and San Michele Arcangelo are located at different points outside the castle walls.

The history of the Church of San Michele Arcangelo dates back to the early 14th century. The church contains a wooden crucifix made by craftsmen from the Alpine valleys; the frescoes are by the painter Bittoni from Passignano. As a result, a single church interior brings together craftwork and paintings with different regional connections.

Palazzo Vincioli and the Sundial

Palazzo Vincioli dates from the 13th or 14th century. Its south wall features a working sundial with a modern dial made of Aurisina stone. When viewing the Palazzo, the south wall brings together the building’s age, its stone material and a working sundial. The contrast between the historic building and the modern dial thus combines architectural history with a practical technical detail.
