Paths with views of Lake Trasimeno

Trekking route 27 Sanguineto–M. Gualandro offers views of Lake Trasimeno, its islands and the agriculturally used plain between Terontola and Castiglione del Lago. The landscape reveals several facets: the lake forms the wide horizon, while the plain and surrounding paths open up different perspectives. If you would like to combine nature experiences with a clear regional focus, this view of the lake is a defining theme around Sanguineto.

Routes through forests and olive groves

The Via del Trasimeno leads from Tuoro sul Trasimeno onward to Sanguineto and then climbs to a panoramic road with views of the lake. After Sanguineto, it descends through forests and olive groves towards Passignano sul Trasimeno. This gives you various starting points for individual travel planning, without requiring the routes to be experienced in the same way.

The Percorso Annibalico

The Percorso Annibalico can be covered on foot or by bicycle and is 7.2 kilometres long. Along the route, there are rest areas with information boards explaining various stages of the battle. This creates a connection between movement and historical context: the boards establish a link to the events in the landscape. The Percorso Annibalico therefore appeals both to those interested in actively experiencing a route and to visitors who wish to explore its historical background.

The Valle di Sanguineto in 217 BC

The Valle di Sanguineto and the surrounding hills were the setting for Hannibal’s famous ambush of the Roman army in late spring 217 BC. This historical connection is an integral part of Sanguineto’s regional story and explains why several paths and structures are associated with the battle of Lake Trasimeno. Those who wish to view the landscape not only as a lake and hill setting, but also in its historical context, will find a particularly clear focus here.

Chiesa di San Bartolomeo

The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo was built at the site where the battle of Lake Trasimeno took place. It was affiliated with a coenobium. The church was restored in 1989; on 5 and 6 August of the same year, it was reopened for worship. Its façade features alternating horizontal bands of red brick and yellowish sandstone. This interplay of colour and material makes the exterior a distinctive architectural detail within historic Sanguineto. A memorial stone was erected beside the church to commemorate the confrontation between Hannibal and Flaminius in 217 BC.

Further historical traces

A monument commemorating the wartime events was erected in Sanguineto in 1921. In addition, a straight road lined with cypresses is considered to be a route dating from Etruscan-Roman times. Together with the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo, the memorial stone and the Valle di Sanguineto, these specific sites offer several reasons to explore the area according to different interests: by bicycle, on foot, through landscapes or through the history of Lake Trasimeno.
