Discover Vaiano: Landscapes, History and Rural Experiences

Vaiano Between Hills and Lake

Vaiano is located on the hills between the Valdichiana Valley and Lake Trasimeno. At 372 metres above sea level, the hamlet is the highest in the municipality of Castiglione del Lago. The area forms a panoramic terrace overlooking the Valdichiana Valley and Lake Trasimeno. The elevation, open landscape and views of two distinctive natural and cultural areas thus shape Vaiano’s character. The elevation and the view are two different points of reference: 372 metres describe the location, while the panoramic terrace describes the field of view.

A Place with a Long History

The built-up hamlet developed along the road connecting Vaiano with Villastrada and Gioiella. In the Late Middle Ages, the ridge on which Vaiano stands served as a transport route between Chiusi and Cortona. The history of the place goes back even further: under Lombard rule, Vaiano was home to a “curtis munita”, meaning a fortified estate. The present-day road to Villastrada and Gioiella and the medieval route between Chiusi and Cortona belong to different historical layers of the settlement’s history.

Religious and community life is also part of the area’s history. The parish church of Vaiano remains dedicated to Sant’Egidio Abate. The Fiera di Sant’Egidio has been held in Vaiano for centuries on 1 September, keeping the saint’s name rooted in the local festival calendar to this day.

Archaeological Traces Around Vaiano

The Villa Gioiella-Vaiano archaeological site is a Roman villa between the present-day settlements of Gioiella and Vaiano. Villa Gioiella-Vaiano was first inhabited in the 2nd century BC and remained occupied at least until the end of the 3rd century AD.

The Tomb of Paradiso is also located near Vaiano. It was discovered in 1908 and restored in the 1970s. The tomb dates from the 2nd century BC and has a travertine door leading to the burial chamber. The inscriptions on the lids of the two ash urns refer to members of the Velsi Prute family, which, according to more recent interpretations, was a branch of the influential Velsi family from Chiusi.

Rural Experiences and Regional Products

Vaiano’s landscape includes restored farmhouses that are now used as agriturismi. At Agricola Bittarelli, guided walks through the fields are offered as part of the Bittarelli Experience, during which sustainable farming methods are presented.

The Bittarelli Experience also includes tastings; visits and activities can be booked on request. The “La Rosa dei Venti” teaching farm offers young visitors educational activities focusing on regional crops, sustainable production methods and local products, including the preparation of traditional recipes. The offerings differ in format: the Bittarelli Experience combines walks through the fields and tastings, while La Rosa dei Venti combines educational activities with the preparation of traditional recipes.
