Alviano between castle, art trail and river landscape

Alviano combines historic buildings, an art trail and an extensive river landscape. You can therefore get to know the area from different perspectives: along paths through the woods and the Monti Amerini, through sacred and rural culture, or through the birdlife of the Oasi WWF di Alviano. This combination gives your travel planning several clear starting points.

Routes with different characteristics

Alviano is one of the 14 stages of the 118 km circular route Cammino della Pietra Bianca through the Monti Amerini and the Tevere river area. The route can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike or in a Joëlette. You can therefore consider which of these three means of transport suits your plans.

The Sentiero dell’Unicorno sets a different tone within Alviano. The permanent art trail comprises eight stations, begins in the Giardini del Sole in the oldest part of Alviano and leads to the Castello. Its route brings together local history and art in a clear sequence.

Another circular route passes through Parco Pietraia, Pianali, the Grotta di Rancacani and the Eremo San Brunone. It is approximately 14 km long and runs through woodland between Alviano and Lugnano in Teverina.

Birdlife and river landscape

The Oasi WWF di Alviano is a destination for birdwatching; 250 bird species have been recorded there. The oasis also protects 900 hectares within the Parco Fluviale del Tevere. This extends across the municipalities of Guardea, Alviano, Montecchio and Civitella d’Agliano. For nature enthusiasts, this creates a clear focus alongside the town’s historical and artistic attractions.

Castle, church and rural culture

The restored Rocca di Alviano stands at the entrance to the town. It was built in 1495 as a square baronial residence with corner towers and defensive structures.

The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta dates from the 15th century and preserves a panel by Niccolò Alunno depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary surrounded by glorifying angels. The Museo della Civiltà Contadina is located in the castle’s basement rooms and preserves rural cultural heritage with tools and objects from agriculture, household life and crafts.

The Casette di Creta are 19th-century residential buildings in the area of Alviano occupied by the Calanchi. They were built from simple materials found locally. The Cappella delle rondini stands at the most panoramic point in the municipality and offers a view over the plain of Teverina and the Alviano-Guardea nature reserve.

Every year, on the afternoon or evening of 5 January, Alviano hosts La Vecchiarella, a revived tradition. Singers go from house to house collecting donations for the souls in purgatory.

Getting there and orientation

From Rome, travel by car takes the A1 motorway towards Florence, the Attigliano exit, Lugnano in Teverina and then the Strada Amerina to Alviano. Alviano railway station is located in the municipality of Alviano and is served by trains in the RV and R categories.
