Casteldelmonte: Castle, Churches and Trails with Panoramic Views

Casteldelmonte is one of the historic centers of the Terre Arnolfe and is located in the Acquasparta area. The village combines medieval castle walls, churches, archaeological traces and trails into the Monti Martani. As one of the villages with the most panoramic views in the Acquasparta area, Casteldelmonte is both a historic place and a starting point for trails through the countryside.

A castle bearing traces of its history

The medieval castle of Casteldelmonte was remodeled in the 15th century. In the Middle Ages, Casteldelmonte was a castle contested by Todi and Spoleto. The Porta Tramontana was once the only entrance to the walls of Casteldelmonte. Inside the castle walls stands the Chiesa di San Biagio, built against the ancient keep.

Churches and sacred art

The Chiesa della Madonna del Fiore was built around 1670 and contains two frescoes dated 1673. The church therefore belongs to the period around 1670; both frescoes are dated just a few years later, to 1673. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista contains three altars. The main altar is dedicated to San Giovanni Battista, while the other two altars are dedicated to the Madonna and San Giuseppe.

A marble fragment of an early Christian sarcophagus dating from the second half of the 4th century was found near the Chiesa di San Giovenale. Today, the fragment is kept at the Museo Civico di Spoleto. The fragment therefore dates from a period clearly predating the medieval remodeling of the castle.

Walking to the Castellieri

A circular trail begins in the main square of Casteldelmonte, by the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista. After a walk, the Castelliere di Monterotondo is 700 m from the main square. The trail there is distinctly uphill, rocky and offers excellent views. To the right, the view opens onto the Acquasparta valley and Acquasparta itself. When planning this trail, therefore, the 700 m distance as well as the significant climb and rocky surface should be taken into account.

The Castellieri in the Monti Martani are the remains of small fortified settlements. The Umbrian people left them from the Middle Bronze Age onward; they were used until the 3rd century BC. Their use therefore extends far beyond the medieval history of Casteldelmonte.

Casteldelmonte by bike

Casteldelmonte is also connected to the Terre Arnolfe by bike. The Tour delle Terre Arnolfe gravel route reaches the village and then continues in the direction of Firenzuola.

The Terre Arnolfe MTB tour reaches Casteldelmonte via a beautiful, gently hilly gravel road. For cycling travelers, the two routes therefore differ in their continuation and in the route profile described. The direction of Firenzuola and the gravel surface each provide specific points of reference for personal route planning.
