Piediluco between lake, history and trails

Lago di Piediluco lies on the southern edge of Umbria, on the border with Lazio, between Monte Luco and Monte Caperno. Lago di Piediluco is a remnant of the ancient Lacus Velinus and is of alluvial origin. A boat trip opens up views of the entire lake, its diverse flora, green hills and valleys. This allows you to take in the landscape from the water as a cohesive whole, while boat trips depart from several landing stages near the beach areas along the lakeshore.

The lake is the venue for national and international rowing regattas. The Parco regionale del Fiume Nera encompasses Lago di Piediluco and is characterized by water sports such as rowing, rafting and canoeing. Traces of history and faith

The Chiesa di San Francesco in Piediluco was completed in 1338 and is a Franciscan sanctuary. It has also been incorporated into the route of the Via di Francesco. Stage 24 of the Via di Francesco from Piediluco to Poggio Bustone begins at the Santuario di San Francesco in Piediluco.

The Rocca di Piediluco stands on Monte Luco. The ancient forests of Monte Luco were considered sacred, while the Rocca towers above the town and the lake. Also here is “Le libertà” by Giulio Turcato: it consists of seven iron columns, each approximately nine metres high, and was erected in Piediluco in 1989.

Festa delle Acque and mountain trails

The Festa delle Acque in Piediluco has its roots in ancient fertility and protective rites held at the summer solstice and continues today as a centuries-old tradition. It includes a traditional night-time parade of allegorical boats made by Piediluco’s historic neighbourhoods, followed by a fireworks display. The lake can thus also be experienced as the setting for a locally rooted festive tradition.

On Monte Caperno, paths shaded by holm oaks lead to the Madonna dell’Eco at an elevation of over 600 metres. Together with the lake, the Rocca and the Chiesa, this creates a range of interests that you can take into account when deciding how to allocate your days: water, history, religious sites or trails at higher elevations.
