Penna In Teverina: Historic Town Center, Nature and Festivals

Penna in Teverina is situated on the top of a hill overlooking the Tiber Valley. In the historic center, the town has largely preserved its medieval urban layout, with notable elements dating from the 15th century.

Natural Phenomenon and Trails

La Solfatara is a geological phenomenon in which carbon dioxide rising from the ground forms pools of water and mud where the gas bubbles up. The La Solfatara area in Penna in Teverina is a stop on the Cammino della Luce. The Cammino della Luce is part of a larger network of paths and routes through the natural landscapes of Italy. On Route 19, an ascent of 4.5 kilometers to Penna in Teverina begins at kilometer 18.

Church, Squares and Historic Entrance

The Church of Santa Maria della Neve has early medieval origins. Its apse is decorated with a 17th-century painting, “La Madonna della Neve e San Valentino.” The church is located in Piazza San Valentino. Porta Civica leads into the historic village of Penna in Teverina and to Piazza San Valentino.

The coats of arms of the Orsini and Anguillara families can still be seen in Palazzo Orsini. The palace was chosen by Maerbale Orsini as a private residence in the 16th century. In the immediate vicinity of Palazzo Orsini are four travertine benches topped with busts depicting a young woman, a boy, a man and an old man; together, they are known as the “Panche delle Quattro Stagioni.”

Outside the walls, a small museum on the steps leading to the viewpoint presents part of the town’s history connected with traditional arts and ancient crafts.

Festivals, Flowers and Regional Tradition

The Festa della Vendemmia has taken place on the third weekend of September for more than 35 years. The Madonna della Neve and Tortiglione festivities take place on August 5. They include the Sagra del Tortiglione, featuring tortiglione, an almond-based sweet from the Umbrian tradition of Lombard origin. Penna in Fiore is a horticultural and flower market held in May that was established to promote the region’s horticultural tradition. Over the course of the year, the dates fall in May, on August 5 and on the third weekend of September; Penna in Fiore therefore takes place before the two festival dates in August and September.

Park and Garden

Parco di Penna in Teverina offers tables with benches, fire pits, barbecue areas and gazebos for meals in the shade, as well as a children’s playground and a fitness trail. Access to the Giardino all'Italiana is free and does not require a reservation; the park is open to everyone.
