Ripalvella between Castle Ruins and Forest Paths

Ripalvella combines Roman traces, ecclesiastical and fortified structures with paths through forests and clearings. Expansive panoramas, a historical connection to the paths, and two festivals on the last weekend of May complete the character of the village. The paths lead to Podere la Torretta, between San Venanzo and Ripalvella, and between Ospedaletto and Ripalvella.

Roman Era and the Church of San Silvestro

A Roman sarcophagus belonging to the Vibi family proves that Ripalvella already existed in Roman times. The village is also home to the Church of San Silvestro. Its oldest structure dates back to the 14th century. The sarcophagus therefore represents the early history of the village, while the oldest church structure relates to a later period. The 14th century refers to the oldest structure, not to the church as a whole.

Castle Walls and Polygonal Tower

Sections of the walls of the 15th-century castle have been preserved in Ripalvella. These castle ruins include a rare polygonal, specifically pentagonal, tower. In architecture, polygonal refers to a ground plan with several straight sides. A pentagon has five such sides; in the case of the tower, the general term is thus made specific. The tower is therefore not generally round or rectangular, but is defined as a polygonal form by its pentagonal shape. The wall sections and the tower are part of Ripalvella’s preserved historic building fabric.

Circular Trail to Podere la Torretta

The circular trail from Ripalvella leads to and around the ruins of Podere la Torretta. On the same circular trail, the route passes through a forest section for 150 metres; it then leads back to Ripalvella. When planning your own stages, the 150-metre forest section can be treated as a clearly defined part of the route. The return to the starting point is part of this circular route.

Route between San Venanzo and Ripalvella

Another route runs between San Venanzo and Ripalvella. It crosses the Torrente Faena, passes through clearings and forests, and offers expansive panoramas. The route therefore includes both wooded and open areas. When dividing the route into your own stages, the crossing of the Torrente Faena, the forest sections, and the clearings can be considered separate sections.

Trail Rules and Historical Connection

There are livestock gates along the path between Ospedaletto and Ripalvella. These must be closed again after passing through. In addition to following the route, it is therefore important to close the gates. In the past, there was also a lively movement of people, animals, and goods between Ospedaletto and Ripalvella.

Festivals on the Last Weekend of May

The festival calendar in Ripalvella includes a festival of fighters and veterans on the last weekend of May. The wild boar festival is also associated with the last weekend of May. Thus, two differently named festivals in Ripalvella are associated with the same May weekend. The two festivals remain distinct events.
