San Venanzo between the Volcanological Park and Medieval History

San Venanzo combines a volcanic landscape with a local history that can be traced from early settlement remains to medieval architectural evidence. The Volcanological Park offers views of volcanic cones, craters and lava flows, as well as rare rocks and minerals, including venanzite. This allows you to combine nature, geology and culture in a single trip.

Volcanology and History in the Town Centre

The Volcanological Museum is housed in an old building in the historic centre of San Venanzo, near the Villa Comunale. The museum's significant exhibits include a dinosaur egg and the skull of Elephas meridionalis. Human presence in San Venanzo is documented from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods as well as the Bronze and Iron Ages; the corresponding finds are preserved in the Volcanological Museum.

Traces of Medieval San Venanzo

The large tower overlooking San Venanzo is a remnant of the medieval castle. The medieval castle of San Venanzo was destroyed in 1437 after repeatedly failing to meet its tax obligations as a fief of the Monaldeschi family. The Church of Madonna Liberatrice contains a 14th-century fresco. The historic Villa Faina is one of San Venanzo's sights.

Paths through Palaeovolcanoes and Landscapes

The San Venanzo–Parco vulcanologico loop trail is a short walk through the palaeovolcanic area immediately around San Venanzo. The San Venanzo–Cornia loop trail begins on Via Gorizia in San Venanzo, crosses the Fosso della Fuga and passes through both wooded and agricultural land. The San Venanzo–Civitella–Marsciano trail reaches the castle of Civitella; the lane beside the church offers panoramic views and a distinctive sense of the village. For planning purposes, you can therefore distinguish between a short geological walk, a landscape trail, and views of the castle and village.

Understanding Historical Routes in Context

In 2004, an educational trail was added that runs through the former venanzite quarry. The historic section from Madonna dei Monti to Marsciano is no longer accessible on foot; instead, a variant is proposed that deviates only slightly from the mapped route. For planning purposes, the historic route and the proposed variant should be considered separately.

Monte Peglia and Protected Nature

The Elmo–Melonta trail runs through the Elmo–Melonta nature area and reaches a ridge offering views of the surrounding forests. The Parco dei Sette Frati, near the summit of Monte Peglia, includes a protected fauna area and the Monte Peglia Flora and Fauna Documentation Centre. Together with Ficulle and Parrano, San Venanzo is part of the Monte Peglia MAB-UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

San Venanzo for Your Travel Planning

When planning your trip, you can choose different focuses among local history, geology and the natural environment. The state-owned building “Fulignano”, near the hamlet of San Marino in the municipality of San Venanzo, has been completely renovated and reorganised to accommodate visitors to the protected natural area and the loop trail that partially borders the integral protection area. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore decide in advance whether local history, geology or the natural environment is more important to you.
