Canale D'agordo: Valle di Garés and Cultural Discoveries

Canale d’Agordo lies at an altitude of 976 metres at the entrance to Valle di Garés and was formerly known as “Forno di Canale”. The approximately 7-kilometre-long glacial valley stretches from the main town towards the Pale di San Martino.

Valle di Garés and Nature Trails

Specific natural attractions include the Comelle Waterfalls. They can be reached via CAI trail no. 704; the trail begins near Capanna Cima Comelle. When planning a visit to Valle di Garés, two dimensions therefore sit side by side: the valley’s approximately seven kilometres and CAI trail no. 704 to the Comelle Waterfalls.

In the Pian de Giare area at an altitude of 1,381 metres, you can walk near the Gares Pond. Gares Pond is designated as a biotope.

Culture between the Museum and the Pieve

The Museo Albino Luciani presents a permanent exhibition spread over four floors, with a multimedia tour about Albino Luciani and the historical context in which he grew up. Audio guides are available in Italian, English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Polish.

The Pieve di San Giovanni Battista has been documented since 1361. It contains a tabernacle by Andrea Brustolon dating from 1696 and an organ built by Gaetano Callido in 1801. Several centuries lie between the first record from 1361 and the two works from 1696 and 1801. Both the tabernacle and the organ are part of the furnishings of the Pieve di San Giovanni Battista.

Local History and Religious Art

The local history also includes the Casa delle Regole, built in 1640 by the Doglioni family from Belluno. The Casa Natale di Papa Luciani contains objects that belonged to Albino Luciani and his family, including a radio as well as liturgical and ceremonial clothing. The Casa delle Regole and the Casa Natale di Papa Luciani represent different historical emphases: one is associated with the year of construction, 1640, while the other is associated with personal belongings.

Stations of the Cross, Murals and Themed Trail

The Stations of the Cross comprise 15 stations with bronze reliefs by Franco Murer depicting various moments of Christ’s Passion. A total of 31 murals have been catalogued in the Canale d’Agordo area. The town is also part of the themed trail “La valle coi Santi alle finestre”. The Italian title can be rendered approximately as “The Valley with Saints at the Windows”.

Cross-Country Skiing and Different Travel Interests

Winter sports are also associated with the Centro Fondo Valle di Gares. The Centro Fondo Valle di Gares has a difficult cross-country ski trail prepared for both classic technique and skating.
