Colle Santa Lucia: Mountain Panorama, Trails and Local History

Colle Santa Lucia combines views of the Dolomites with an unusually rich local history. From here, there is a panoramic view over the Val Fiorentina, with Pelmo and Civetta in the background. The Passo Giau also partly belongs to the municipality: its eastern half lies in Colle Santa Lucia. The pass is used by hikers, cyclists and motorcyclists, making the town interesting for a variety of travel plans.

Hiking between mines and pass routes

A suggested section of the Strada de la Vena runs between Colle Santa Lucia and Castello di Andraz. At Maso di Troi, in the easternmost section of this road, the remains of old mines and a restored mine entrance can be seen. It is possible to walk a few dozen metres into the entrance. The higher historical route of the Strada de la Vena leads to Pianaz and can be completed on foot in 5–6 hours. When undertaking a hike lasting several hours to Pianaz, the stated duration of 5–6 hours should be taken into account when planning the day. The orange route of the Alta Via dell’Orso begins in the historic centre of Colle Santa Lucia, while the green route starts at Rifugio Fedare on Passo Giau. CAI trail 463 leads from Colle Santa Lucia to Rifugio Fedare and is 7.5 km long. On the Alta Via dell’Orso, the chosen starting point determines whether the stage begins in the historic centre or at Passo Giau.

Historic buildings and mining history

In the historic centre of Villagrande, Casa Piazza stands on the main road. The building can be recognised by a round arch that allows passage along a mule-track route. The Chiesa di S. Lucia at Via Villagrande 29 contains the Meridiana, a fresco sundial dating from 1606. Cesa de Jan was built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries by the Chizzali brothers; the year 1612 is inscribed above its entrance. Cesa de Jan houses permanent exhibitions on the history, customs and traditions of the Colle area. The mining history also includes the Miniera dei Vauz, a 17th-century mine in the Miniere del Fursil area. Its entrance can be reached by minibus, after which an attendant accompanies visitors during the short tour inside. The iron-bearing ore extracted in the Miniere del Fursil was suitable for weapons production because of its high value. The Miniera dei Vauz in the Miniere del Fursil area is connected with the iron-bearing ore extracted there.

Getting to Colle Santa Lucia

Colle Santa Lucia can be reached by bus from Mestre, Mogliano and Treviso as far as Caprile; from there, a connection with Dolomitibus is available. Those travelling from Mestre, Mogliano or Treviso should plan to change in Caprile and then continue with the Dolomitibus connection.
