Feltre between the Palio, palaces and museums

Feltre combines a documented historical connection with buildings, museums and paths that appeal to different interests. The Palio di Feltre commemorates the city of Feltre joining the Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia on 15 June 1404. It takes place over the three days of Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the first weekend in August.

The Museo Civico archeologico is housed in the 16th-century Palazzo Villabruna. The Cathedral of Feltre preserves an 11th-century crypt and a Gothic apse that survived the destruction of 1510. The Teatro de La Sena is located on the first floor of the Palazzo della Ragione, a 16th-century palace with large Palladian arcades on Piazza Maggiore.

The Torre dell’Orologio was the historic entrance to the Castello di Feltre and contains a virtual reconstruction of the changes to the castle and Piazza Maggiore. The Torre del Campanon rises approximately 34 metres above the Colle delle Capre; its construction history includes a late Romanesque and a late medieval building phase.

The state archaeological area includes Roman remains consisting of rooms along a paved road interpreted as shops, as well as a large building understood to have been the representative seat of one or more professional associations. The Antiche prigioni in the Palazzo Pretorio preserve heavy prison doors fitted with hardware, viewing windows and double bolts, cell numbering, inscriptions and graffiti from their use as a prison until 1965.

Feltre is also connected with personal cultural history: Carlo Goldoni came to Feltre in 1729 as an assistant in the criminal chancery and wrote his first plays there. The collection of the Galleria d’arte moderna Carlo Rizzarda includes paintings, sculptures, decorative art objects, furniture and works of art from Carlo Rizzarda’s Milanese residential environment.

Mountains, waterways and paths through the surrounding area

Monte Tomatico is located in the immediate vicinity of Feltre, while Monte Avena, Cima Sassuma and Monte Santo are mountains or peaks in the area around Feltre. Established in 1971, the Vincheto di Celarda covers 92 hectares of wetlands with standing and flowing waters, riparian forests, meadows and scrubland.

The Anello del Rio Musil circular route follows the waterways around Feltre and Pedavena for approximately 5 kilometres. From the centre of Feltre, the circular route can be explored on foot or by bicycle. On the Anello delle Ville di Cart-Vellai, numerous Venetian villas can be discovered in a green natural landscape.

The Percorso urbano dei „conventi perduti“ runs partly through Feltre and partly through the natural areas on Monte Telva and Monte Miesna. Its final stop is the 11th-century sanctuary on Monte Miesna, dedicated to the holy martyrs Vittore and Corona.

The wider region around Feltre also includes Covolo di Butistone, a fort, Torri di Credazzo, a castle, Tipoteca Museo, a museum, and the Museo del '900 e della Grande Guerra, also a museum. The range therefore extends from Roman remains and Venetian architectural history to sacred sites, art, landscapes and selected paths.
