Pieve d'Alpago: Culture, Mountains and Italian History

History and Art in Pieve d'Alpago

On 30 October 1340, Pieve d'Alpago was the setting for the investiture of Giacoma da Vivaro. An even earlier period is represented by a bronze situla recovered in Pian de la Gnela: the find was discovered in 2002 and dated to the period between the late 6th and early 5th centuries BC. The necropolis of Pian de la Gnela lies on a terrace at an elevation of 900 to 925 metres, descending from Monte Dolada in a south-easterly direction towards the Torrente Tesa.

An important sacred landmark is the parish church of Madonna del Rosario in Pieve d'Alpago, whose construction began in 1185. The rebuilt church was completed by 1879. Above its right side door is a painting by Gaspare Diziani. Thus, a single building brings together the church's long construction history and a painting by Gaspare Diziani.

Villa Falìn is also one of the area's notable cultural attractions. The villa was built in the 17th century and remodelled in later centuries. It is the only Venetian villa in Alpago located in Pieve. In addition, the Sagra di Sant'Anna takes place every year in the centre of Pieve d'Alpago. The Museo Civico Belluno, Palazzo del Capitano and Palazzo dei Rettori are also located in the surrounding area. The historic site La splendida Belluno and the church of Plois, with a wooden cross by Andrea Brustolon, are likewise nearby.

Mountain Landscape and Multi-Day Hiking

Monte Dolada is located in the immediate vicinity of Pieve d'Alpago and is also spatially connected to the terrace of Pian de la Gnela. Other mountains in the area around Pieve d'Alpago include Coll Mai, Monte Teverone and Col Falalto.

For hiking enthusiasts, the Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 7 is a particularly clearly defined option. It begins at Rifugio Dolomieu al Dolàda in Pieve d'Alpago and can be completed in five days. The possibility of a five-day hike helps you distinguish a multi-day tour in your mind from shorter cultural or landscape experiences, without restricting the area to a single type of trip.
