Quero between Fortress and Landscape

Quero combines military history, natural history and trails through a distinctive landscape. Visitors interested in history will find the Castelnuovo di Quero fortress and the Quero military cemetery here; those who prefer activity and nature can turn their attention to the Quero–Schievenin trail and the Museo Naturalistico Valle di Schievenin. This brings different interests together in one travel plan without one theme overshadowing the others.

Quero’s strategic location on an important road and beside a bottleneck favoured a Roman settlement. In the Middle Ages, the town developed in connection with fortifications on the border with Feltre. This combination of transport route, bottleneck and border fortification forms the historical background to Quero’s buildings and memorial sites.

Castelnuovo di Quero and the Military Cemetery

The Castelnuovo di Quero fortress was built in the 14th century for military and commercial purposes. It retains its original layout and now serves as a prayer house for the Somaschi Fathers. Thus, both its former function and its current religious use coexist in a historic building.

The Quero military cemetery is the resting place of 3,465 German and Austro-Hungarian soldiers who died in the First World War. The cemetery was built within three years and officially inaugurated on 25 May 1939. From the cemetery keeper’s house, a footpath leads through the orchard to the hill and across grassy slopes to the entrance of the Mausoleo di Quero. The path connects the memorial site with a clear experience of the landscape. For those interested in culture, the military cemetery remains a separate historical point of interest alongside Castelnuovo di Quero.

Easy Circular Trail and Natural History

The Quero–Schievenin trail is an easy circular trail. It includes a path to the Chiesa di San Valentino and then leads back to the starting point. This return is part of the route and makes it easier to orient yourself when planning a day with a manageable trail structure.

The Museo Naturalistico Valle di Schievenin has collection areas dedicated to the geology, zoology and botany of the Valle di Schievenin and Monte Grappa. Together with the circular trail, it creates a natural history focus that connects geological, zoological and botanical topics with the landscape of Schievenin and Monte Grappa.

Environmental Education and Local Expression

As part of the “Dal Museo al territorio” project, environmental education trails are offered along natural history and historical routes in the area and in the premises of the Centro Parrocchiale.

The Sagra dei S’cioss also has a local linguistic connection. In the local dialect, “s’cioss” means “snail”; the Sagra takes its name from this word.
