Vigo di Cadore: Churches, Mountain Trails and Fortress History

Vigo di Cadore combines evidence of artistic and military history with mountain trails, viewpoints and regional cuisine. Here you can combine historic churches and library culture with hikes to fortifications, a botanical trail or a limestone climbing crag. The local cheese culture is also one of the specifically documented experiences in the surrounding area.

Churches, Library and Living History

Important religious buildings include the Chiesa di Sant'Orsola. It was built between 1313 and 1321 as a burial chapel and is recognized as a national monument. The Chiesa della Madonna della Difesa was built between 1512 and 1515. The local population commissioned it as a votive offering after the threat posed by the troops of Maximilian I of Habsburg had been overcome.

The Chiesa Pievanale di San Martino di Tours dates from 1559 and was extended in the 18th century. The bell tower standing opposite the Chiesa Pievanale di San Martino di Tours also dates from 1599. The history of the Chiesa di San Daniele goes back even further: it already existed in 1345 and was rebuilt in 1350. The building of the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Bernardino da Siena was almost completely rebuilt in 1947; its choir belongs to the original 15th-century building.

Another way to explore the region's past is through the Biblioteca storica cadorina, founded in 1892 by Professor Antonio Ronzon. In Salagona, the Chiesa di Santa Margherita has existed since 1272 and is considered the oldest surviving church in Cadore. During the Christmas season, the Presepio Animato di Laggio also offers a seasonal attraction: it has been set up in the former elementary school of Laggio di Cadore since 1984 and is open during the Christmas season.

Hiking Trails, Peaks and Fortifications

There are different formats available for planning your excursions. Itinerario 004 is a 1.66-kilometre out-and-back route from Laggio to the Appostamento militare Col Ciampon. This is considered an open-air museum with trenches, military installations and relics from the First World War. Itinerario 071 leads from Laggio via the Sentiero botanico Gabriele Larese and Col Ciampon to the Chiesetta San Daniele. The Sentiero botanico Gabriele Larese showcases trees, shrubs and flowers along a short, accessible trail.

The Chiesa di San Daniele can be reached from Col Ciampon via a steep ascent of around 20 minutes. The approach to the Chiesetta San Daniele includes fixed ropes and is considered not exposed. The Forra di Romotoi section adds a suspension bridge, ladders and fixed ropes to the trails. The Palestra di Roccia, a limestone climbing crag on Monte Tudaio, can be reached from the small car park at the barrier near Piniè in around ten minutes on foot.

Monte Tudaio offers a 360-degree panorama from Alta Val Piave to Val d'Ansiei, including the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Peralba. At its summit, at an altitude of 2,114 metres, the Forte del Monte Tudaio was built by the Italian Corps of Engineers between 1911 and 1915. The ascent from Piniè to the summit follows a military mule track of more than eight kilometres and takes around four hours. Those looking for a longer route can take the Altavia dei Forti dell’Oltrepiave, a 59.83-kilometre trail that begins in Piniè in Vigo di Cadore and leads to Passo Mauria.

Further military-history destinations add to this network of trails. The Batteria di Col Pelos and the Forte di Col Piccolo were part of the Fortezza Cadore-Maè defence system. From Palù near Vigo, the Batteria di Col Pelos can be reached via an approximately one-kilometre-long, comfortably ascending road; the trench there is well preserved and accessible on foot. The Vallo alpino del Littorio is an underground defence system built by Mussolini between 1939 and 1941. Its location near Piniè can be reached by following the signs to the Forte di Monte Tudaio. The Bivacco „L. Da Rin Chiaurei“ can be reached from Piniè either via the CAI 339 military mule track or via the Sentiero dei Mede.

Plateau and Regional Cuisine

Malga Casera Razzo is located at an altitude of 1,800 metres and can be reached by car from Vigo di Cadore. There you can taste and buy local cheeses. The cheeses are made from the milk of cattle grazing on the plateau or sourced from milk produced at nearby mountain pastures. Changing lunch and dinner menus are available there by reservation only.

When choosing your accommodation, you can focus your stay on these different interests: churches and historical sites, short nature trails, longer mountain tours, military installations or regional products. The different route lengths and walking times help you adapt your daily planning realistically to your preferred pace.
