Cittadella: Ramparts, Museums and History

Cittadella combines a fully walkable medieval rampart walk with a range of historical and cultural themes. The elliptical city walls, the Torre di Malta, the Civic Archaeological Museum and the Museo del Duomo offer different perspectives for your stay: they range from fortifications and urban history to archaeological finds and dated works of art. The Rampart Walk Along the City Walls

The medieval Camminamento di Ronda is a fully walkable, elliptical rampart walk. Its route offers panoramic views at a height of 15 metres and makes the city fortifications themselves the defining experience. The complete walk along Cittadella's city walls takes approximately 45 minutes. This gives you a clearly defined route that combines movement with views of the fortifications.

Opening Hours, Duration and How to Get There

Cittadella's city walls are open daily from 9 a.m.; the only closing day is Christmas Day. The elliptical city walls have a circumference of 1,461 metres. If you arrive by train, after approximately 500 metres along Viale della Stazione you will reach the southern entrance to Cittadella's city walls, Porta Padova.

From the Torre di Malta to the Renaissance

The Torre di Malta was built in 1251 by Ezzelino III da Romano as a prison for his enemies. The Civic Archaeological Museum is located in the Torre di Malta. It houses archaeological finds from Cittadella and the surrounding area dating from the Bronze Age to the Renaissance. This site therefore brings together the history of a medieval building and the extensive chronological span of the archaeological finds.

Art at the Museo del Duomo

The Museo del Duomo displays Jacopo Bassano's painting “Cena in Emmaus” from 1537. The museum also displays “Compianto sul Cristo morto”, a work attributed to Andrea da Murano dating from the late 15th century. The two works represent different periods of creation and provide another way to engage with art and religiously shaped pictorial traditions during your stay in Cittadella.

Exhibitions and Special Dates

At the Palazzo Pretorio, the Fondazione Pretorio Onlus organises exhibitions of national significance. In addition, the Fiera Franca di Cittadella takes place annually from Saturday to Monday on the fourth weekend of October. In Cittadella, the 14th edition of FORMAGGIO IN VILLA was scheduled as a cheese-themed visitor event from Friday the 17th to Sunday the 19th of April 2026. Alongside the permanently described buildings, these dates provide additional focal points for travel planning.

The Palazzo Pretorio, the Fiera Franca and FORMAGGIO IN VILLA add their own event-related connections to the cultural and cheese-related side of the town. Cittadella therefore offers points of interest for a trip that considers specific places, art and events together.
