San Salvaro: Monastery, Church and Historic Routes

At the heart of San Salvaro are the Monastero di San Salvaro, the Romanesque church and the Museo delle Antiche Vie. Monastery complex with a history of ancient routes

The Monastero Camaldolese di San Salvaro was built along the “Callis Magna,” an ancient road that connected the Bassa Padovana with the Bassa Veronese. The complex was originally intended for a Schola Sacerdotum, or seminary. The complex was fully restored in 1999. The restored San Salvaro complex houses a youth hostel. Its original purpose as a seminary and the youth hostel belong to different phases in the history of the complex.

Romanesque church, Gothic image motif

The church of San Salvaro was built in the Romanesque style. The apse basin contains a Christ Pantocrator, which historians date to the Gothic period. The last work on the church was carried out in the 1970s following damage it suffered during the Second World War. For visitors interested in culture, this ensemble combines architectural form, sacred art and the eventful history of the 20th century.

The Museo delle Antiche Vie

The Museo delle Antiche Vie is dedicated to the history of rural culture and the area between the Colli Euganei and the Adige. The first exhibition room contains historical documents and maps, as well as a reproduction of the well-known map “Retratto del Gorzon.” The museum also presents medieval routes used by pilgrims on their way to important pilgrimage destinations.

Routes along the Fratta and through the surrounding area

From San Salvaro, the route follows the paved and lightly trafficked right bank of the Fratta River. The Ciclabile delle Città murate leads to San Salvaro di Urbana. Percorso 4 reaches the Monastero di San Salvaro by crossing a bridge. The route along the river, the connection to San Salvaro di Urbana and the bridge crossing to the monastery each create a distinct spatial focus.
