Este combines the history of the Castello Carrarese with museums, sacred art, Venetian cuisine and routes into the landscape of the Euganean Hills. This makes the city suitable for a trip in which you can combine history, regional everyday culture and different ways of exploring.
Routes through the Landscape and City
The Sentiero del Principe begins in Este on Via dei Cappuccini, next to the Arco del Falconetto in the historic centre. Its route conveys the landscape transition between the Euganean Hills and the surrounding Venetian plain. Este has a railway station on the Padova–Mantova railway line. In addition, from the equipped bus stop on Via Martiri della Libertà, it is only a short walk to the Castello Carrarese. These two arrival points help you find your way around Este and the Castello Carrarese in practical terms.
Castello Carrarese and Early History
The castle’s history dates back to the time of Ubertino da Carrara. He had the defensive structure of the town of Este built and, in 1339, continued the transformation of the Castello Carrarese into its present form. In the area of the Castello Carrarese, two medieval archaeological areas are currently set up for visits: one is located in the basement of the museum and is accessible only with permission. The other lies on the summit of the hill where the core of the first Este castle was located.
The Museo Nazionale Atestino displays finds from the Euganean Hills. They document human life and human activity from the Middle Palaeolithic through the entire Bronze Age. For people with mobility impairments, the museum is accessible through the removal of architectural barriers and a lift to the first floor. This makes it possible to incorporate the early history of the surrounding area into travel planning from a practical perspective as well.
Churches, Art and Religious Heritage
The Chiesa di San Martino is the oldest religious building in the city of Este. Its medieval structure has been preserved; Romanesque-Gothic elements are particularly visible in the apse area and the bell tower. The Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie preserves a Byzantine icon of the Madonna delle Grazie, which was enthroned in 1479. The basilica was founded in the 15th century at the behest of Marquis Taddeo d’Este.
The works of art in Este also connect local history with broader cultural contexts. The ceiling of Room 4 in the Palazzo Mocenigo is decorated with scenes from Torquato Tasso’s Jerusalem Delivered from 1581. The painting Saint Thecla by Giambattista Tiepolo tells of the plague that struck the Este area in 1630 and was installed in the cathedral of Este on 24 December 1759.
Market and Venetian Cuisine
Este’s weekly market takes place in the historic centre every Wednesday and Saturday. Venetian cuisine in Este includes traditional dishes based on polenta and Stracotto d’asino. Schizzotto is considered a typical baked product of Venetian cuisine and is associated with Este. Market dates and regional dishes add an everyday cultural touch to the stay alongside the museums and churches.
Further Options for Your Planning
The event “Visite guidate alle manifatture di Este” was scheduled to take place in Este in 2026. The Guido-Negri route takes about an hour and is accompanied by a map and prepared texts that guide visitors through an immersive experience. In addition, Este’s municipal swimming pool is intended for swimmers and water enthusiasts of all ages, as well as for use in winter and summer. As a result, alongside history and art, the offering includes a planned event, a route of manageable duration and a water-based activity intended for use across the seasons.
