Ghetto Between Forest and Cultural Heritage

Ghetto di Teolo is considered a group of houses at the eastern foot of Monteseo de Piantea. The municipality of Teolo lies entirely within the Parco Regionale dei Colli Euganei. At Passo Fiorine, the landscape comprises approximately 2 hectares of meadows and 3 hectares of chestnut forest, with numerous oaks and individual wild cherry trees.

Landscape and Practical Information

The Area Pubblica “Lieta Carraresi” at Passo Fiorine has a large car park, an accessible access ramp and several rest areas for people with disabilities. From Passo Fiorine, an easy path leads to the Oratorio di S. Antonio Abate. The Romanesque building dates from the 14th century.

The Santuario della Madonna del Monte has been documented since 1253. It houses a 14th-century statue of the Madonna and includes a small Benedictine monastery dependent on the Abbazia di Praglia. Rocca Pendice is a natural rock face made of towering trachyte and is traditionally used for sport climbing. A pair of peregrine falcons nests there every year; this contributed significantly to the park being designated a Special Protection Area within the Natura 2000 network.

A cultural addition is provided by the Museo d'arte contemporanea Dino Formaggio. It displays painting and sculpture from the late 19th century to the present, comprises around 200 works and is located in the Palazzetto dei Vicari in Teolo.

Hiking Between Ghetto and Monte Grande

Teolo offers numerous hikes on CAI trails. The Sentiero del Monte Grande is 4,200 metres long and is considered manageable without any particular difficulties. It runs along the ridge and then descends along the southern slope, passing down through pubescent oaks, manna ashes, rockroses, tree heathers and strawberry trees.

The Monte Grande e Monte della Madonna hiking route leads from Teolo towards Ghetto, where it turns left into the forest and climbs to Passo Le Fiorine. The route through Ghetto is approximately 13 kilometres long, involves around 500 metres of ascent and descent, and takes about five hours without breaks. This provides both a shorter path and a considerably longer circular route with clearly stated reference figures for planning.

Cycling Routes and the “Vietnam” Singletrack

The Anello dei Colli Euganei is a 63-kilometre panoramic cycling route through the Teolo area. The Salita al Monte Grande cycling tour reaches Ghetto di Teolo via the singletrack known as “Vietnam”. It leads downhill through the forest to Via Chiesa in Località Ghetto di Teolo. The trail is steep, runs through the forest and may require cyclists to dismount.

Nature Observation and Local Cuisine

A forest path reaches Ghetto di Teolo after descending from the southern slope of Monte Fiorine and from Monteseo de Piantea via Resoro. Along this path, wildflowers can be found in spring and mushrooms in autumn. The rare wild orchid Epipactis microphylla was recorded there in the past.

Via Ghetto is reached from the road to Santuario Monte Madonna: after about 300 metres, turn left at the junction onto a road restricted to residents. Teolo’s local cuisine includes handmade gnocchi and Schissotto, a rustic bread. Wineries in Teolo also offer visits to their estates, walks through the vineyards and wine tastings.
