Porto Viro: Fossil Dunes, Birdlife and Delta History

Porto Viro combines a water-shaped landscape with traces of ancient coastlines and an accessible regional history. North of the town centre lies the Pineta di Fornaci. Its character is defined by fossil dunes – sand formations shaped by the wind near ancient coastlines. This is where discovering the area begins: not with a single attraction, but with a landscape in which nature observation, coastal relief and history stand closely side by side.

Fossil Coastlines and Protected Landscapes

The Dune fossili di Porto Viro are also part of the Parco Regionale Veneto del Delta del Po. They are classified as Siti di Importanza Comunitaria (SIC) and are considered oases of biodiversity because of their distinctive vegetation. At Donada, the Dune fossili di Donada also reveal the ancient Adriatic coastline that existed in Etruscan times. The preserved fossil dunes there are among the last remnants of a coastal barrier system that formed between the pre-Roman Etruscan period and the early Middle Ages. Visitors to Porto Viro therefore encounter a landscape whose present-day forms reach far back into the past.

Another landscape area is the Golena di Ca' Pisani. It covers approximately 43 hectares and includes the embankment section on the left bank of the Po di Maistra, wetlands, around 4 hectares of woodland, as well as areas formerly used for agriculture that now lie fallow. Several paths, birdwatching observation points, a small visitor centre and reconstructed traditional fishing structures make the Golena a place where different aspects of the river landscape come together.

Birdwatching and an Easy Cycling Route

The Golena di Ca' Pisani is an important bird habitat. Among other species, visitors can observe little egrets, grey herons, great egrets, purple herons, squacco herons, black-winged stilts, European bee-eaters, Western marsh harriers and hoopoes. For your planning, this means that Porto Viro is particularly appealing if you want not only to look at the landscape, but also to experience it more closely along paths and from observation points.

La Via delle Valli Sud is also suitable for birdwatching and nature photography. Seasonal waterbirds can be observed along the lagoon and valley waters, including flamingos, which are also frequently seen. The route is designated as an easy cycling route with a duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes. Its starting point is at the car park at Via delle Valli 1 in Porto Levante (Porto Viro).

Museums, Everyday Life and the History of Water

The Museo della Corte di Ca' Cappello occupies the rooms of a 17th-century complex. Its ethnographic section reconstructs the rural life of the Polesine through a country tavern from the 1950s, a kitchen, a bedroom and an attic containing children's games and everyday objects. The beekeeping centre in Ca' Cappellino includes an extraction room and a sales outlet for honey produced in the park. The honey is sold under the brand name Miele del Parco del Delta del Po.

The history of hydraulic engineering is also present in Porto Viro. The Taglio di Porto Viro was a major hydraulic construction project of the Republic of Venice in the early 17th century, through which a greater volume of water was diverted southwards. At the entrance to Porto Viro, at the exit from the S.S. Romea, is the Centro Visitatori del Parco di Porto Viro, featuring a large diorama of the Po Delta. The open-air museum can be accessed from two sides of the park; both paths lead to the Ghiacciaia.

From the Delta to the Coast

The coastal perspective includes the Spiaggia di Scanno Cavallari, which is 4.5 km long. During the summer season, a short boat trip takes visitors to Scanno Cavallari.
