Asolo: History, Culture, Rocca and Forest

Historical Traces and Cultural Sites

The Torre Civica is also known as the Torre dell’Orologio, is one of the four towers of the Castello di Asolo and has been documented since the 10th century. The double name is helpful when you want to distinguish Asolo’s historic buildings.

The archaeological section of the Museo Civico di Asolo displays finds from Asolo and the surrounding area. They date from prehistoric times through the medieval-Renaissance period. Around the Casa Gotica, archaeological excavations documented continuous settlement in Asolo from the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age (10th–9th century BC) through the Middle Ages and into the modern era.

The remains of a Roman theatre dating from around the 2nd century AD are located in the park of Villa Freya. The monastery and its associated church of S. Anna were built on Colle Messano in the years immediately after 1586. Both sites add different archaeological and architectural evidence to Asolo’s history.

The Rocca is a military fortification on Monte Ricco (310 m). It was built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. The Sentiero della Rocca (No. 39) leads to the Rocca via a staircase with 280 steps; this number of steps provides a specific figure for planning your day.
