Historical Sites and Spiritual Heritage

The Abbazia di Sant’Eustachio was founded in the first half of the 11th century by Rambaldo III, Count of Treviso, and his mother Gisla. The church retains its Romanesque structure. In 1552, Giovanni della Casa wrote Il Galateo and Rime e prose at the Abbazia di Sant’Eustachio.

The Certosa del Montello was established in the 14th century near the Valle delle Tre Fonti, an important karst spring or karst resurgence. The Grotta di San Girolamo in the Valle delle Tre Fonti is considered to have been the home of the first hermit, Giovanni di Fassa.

Museums, Remembrance and Aviation

The Sacrario Militare del Montello preserves the remains of 9,325 soldiers who fell in the First World War during the battles on the Piave. Its front viewing balcony overlooks the battlefield of the Battaglia del Solstizio. The Museo dei soldati del Montello was founded in 1992 and collects weapons, ammunition, memorabilia, topographic maps, documents and photographs of soldiers who fought on Montello. The Museo della Battaglia del Montello displays original maps, artefacts and memorabilia, as well as reconstructions of military positions, some of which were created using materials from the period. The Fondazione Jonathan Collection in Nervesa della Battaglia offers another way of exploring history: it houses a flying museum connected with the aviation history of the First World War. Its aircraft are faithful, airworthy reproductions of historic aircraft and are regularly presented in flight at public events and functions. The Hangar Francesco Baracca was built to house the only airworthy replica in the world of the First World War Caproni Ca.3 bomber.

The route Montello – I siti della battaglia del Piave passes through typical Montello forests, wine-growing areas, karst sinkholes and riverside areas. L’anello del Montello includes, north of Montello, preserved remains of first- and second-line trenches, as well as bunkers. The Pista ciclabile della Tradotta follows the former Montebelluna–Susegana railway line, which was built for military purposes.

The walking route Nervesa tra il Piave e la Tradotta begins in Bidasio, follows the Piave, passes through Nervesa della Battaglia and continues to the former military railway line.
