Cimadolmo on the Piave: River Landscape, Festivals and History

Cimadolmo reveals itself through its location on the Piave, its deeply rooted traditions and an events calendar that brings together regional products, music and shared experiences. The area extends for more than 7 kilometres along the left bank of the Piave. Fifty percent of the area lies within the river’s embankments. These dimensions shape the town just as much as the connection between the river landscape, everyday culture and history.

River Landscape and Paths along the Piave

One specific way to explore the landscape is offered by the Strada dell'Asparago Bianco di Cimadolmo IGP. It leads to the Grave di Papadopoli, where nature trails run through the Piave ecosystem. The Grave di Papadopoli area is connected to both banks of the Piave by two road bridges built in the 1970s. For planning purposes, the river landscape can therefore be understood both through its natural features and its distinctive infrastructure.

Traces of History and Change

The past can also be experienced in several individual places. The large flood barrier at Cimadolmo was built between 1884 and 1886 to protect the settlements on the left bank of the Piave. In Stabiuzzo, there is evidence of a Roman military station along the Via Postumia. The old Church of San Silvestro in Cimadolmo was repeatedly destroyed by floods in the 15th and 16th centuries. A ferry had been operating in Madorbo since Roman times; near its old landing place stands an Austrian hydrometer dating from 1832. In San Michele di Piave, the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo also houses a work by the painter known as El Greco, dated to the end of the 16th century.

Market, Asparagus and Festivals

Cimadolmo’s weekly market takes place on Tuesdays in Piazza Martiri della Libertà and offers fresh local products. Asparagus is also at the heart of the Festa dell’Asparago Bianco IGP di Cimadolmo, organised every year in April and May by the Pro Loco di Cimadolmo. In September, the Festa del Pesce e delle Nostre Acque follows, also organised by the Pro Loco di Cimadolmo. This means you can encounter typical products and local festival culture at different times throughout the year.

Music and Local Tradition

The Sagra dei Amoi in Stabiuzzo takes place on the first weekend of July at the same time as the religious festival of the Madonna del Latte and is rooted in local tradition. The three-day Sagra includes performances as well as live and DJ music, appealing to all age groups. Those visiting Cimadolmo with a focus on culture or food will find an occasion here where history, religiously shaped tradition and a contemporary events programme come together.

Sport and Library

Cimadolmo’s sports facilities on Via dello Sport include a straight athletics track, a large natural-grass football pitch, an uncovered grandstand and adjoining changing rooms, two artificial-turf courts for futsal and tennis, and a sports hall. The annual Sport al Centro sports festival takes place at these facilities in September. The Biblioteca comunale “G. Agostinetti” has reading areas for children and young people, adults, and the Venetian tradition, and organises staged readings for children once a month on a Saturday.
