Fontanelle: Churches, Villas and the Giramonticano

Fontanelle is located in the Province of Treviso in a completely flat area. Its character can be discovered through historic churches, villas and a spring with a long tradition. This creates a townscape where cultural and historical discoveries stand alongside experiences of the landscape; the historical and art-historical tour and the Giramonticano each provide a different focus.

Historical and Art-Historical Highlights

Fontanelle has a historical and art-historical tour featuring the local sights of Chiesa di San Pietro, Villa Marcello, Chiesa di Lutrano and Villa Galvagna. For visitors interested in culture, this provides a clear framework for exploring the town, where sacred buildings and villas stand alongside one another. The individual stops offer different perspectives on architectural history, religious tradition and Fontanelle's historical character.

The Chiesa di San Pietro was consecrated by Bishop Nicolò Trevisan on 24 September 1480. At the same time, it dates back approximately to the middle of the 15th century. The sacred building thus combines a precise consecration date with an older, only approximate chronological classification.

Today's Chiesa di Lutrano was extended and restored from 1832 to 1840; further work followed in 1850. Its bell tower now stands next to the church. This building therefore makes it possible to observe both a construction history that was continued over several phases and a clearly recognizable spatial relationship between the tower and the church building.

The Chiesetta di Santa Maria del Palù already existed in 1185. A spring that flows throughout the year rises beneath the altar. Emilio Girelli built a circular temple around this spring. Here, an early historical record, a permanent watercourse and a freestanding circular building come together to create a particularly multifaceted site within Fontanelle's cultural history.

The Annunciation of the Lord is celebrated every year on 25 March at the circular temple near Santa Maria del Palù.

The construction of Villa Galvagna is almost unanimously attributed to the Galvagna family.

The Giramonticano on the Monticano

The Giramonticano is a nature trail on the embankment of the Monticano River. It is connected to the cycling network and to smaller roads near the river. The Giramonticano reaches Fontanelle, runs along the Monticano River and passes through a well-maintained rural landscape. The focus is therefore on the watercourse, the embankment path and the landscape along the river.
