Conegliano: Culture, Prosecco Hills and Paths through the Landscape

Conegliano brings together a historic town centre, winegrowing, gentle moraine hills and routes for cycling and nature experiences within a compact area. You can get to know the town through its art and history, plan wine tastings at the wineries or set out from Conegliano into the surrounding countryside.

Orientation and Historical Impressions

For orientation during your visit, Conegliano’s IAT tourist information office is located on Viale Carducci, just a few steps from Conegliano railway station. Visitors can obtain multilingual information about the town and its surrounding area there. You can also book and take part in guided tours.

Conegliano Cathedral was begun in 1345 by the Battuti. The cathedral houses an altarpiece by Giambattista Cima da Conegliano dating from 1493. Contrada Granda is the traditional name for the route of the main street through the historic centre. It includes Via XX Settembre, Piazza Cima and Via Beato Marco Ongaro.

The bell tower of the castle on the summit of Conegliano’s hill now houses the town museum. The Museo Manzoni displays scientific materials, instruments, publications and locations of the institute where the professor conducted research every day.

The restored cloister of the Convent of San Francesco is primarily used for cultural activities. The Sala dei Battuti contains a fresco cycle with scenes from the Creation of the World to the Last Judgment. Conegliano’s Jewish Cemetery on Cabalan Hill was established in 1545. Guided tours of Conegliano’s Jewish Cemetery are available on the first Sunday of the month from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., as well as visits on other days by prior arrangement.

Winegrowing and the Hills around Conegliano

The G.B. Cerletti School of Viticulture in Conegliano was founded in 1876 and is considered Italy’s oldest school of viticulture. At Conegliano’s wineries, guided wine tastings and visits to the wineries and vineyards are possible by prior reservation.

The Strada del Prosecco e Vini dei Colli Conegliano-Valdobbiadene runs through the gentle moraine hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. This gives the wine-growing landscape a clearly recognisable character that is both culinary and scenic.

Exploring by Bike and on Foot

The Munich–Venice cycling route passes through Conegliano. The Bike Tour Prosecco is a 35-kilometre e-bike ride through vineyards that is also suitable for less-trained cyclists. It starts in Conegliano town centre.

Along the Monticano, visitors can explore the riverside nature from Conegliano. The route can lead north as far as Lago di Pradella, a small and picturesque lake formerly known as “Lago del Majo”.
